I'm thrilled to see the Mets in the headlines as "interested" in Otani, Cain, Santana, Bruce, and other big-ticket free agents. But given Sandy's previous statements about lowering payroll, I find the idea of the Mets actually signing any of these players unlikely. Especially if the team plans to also sign a top RP to a multi-year deal.

Why the rumors, then? It seems like a recipe to disappoint and leave an impression that the team didn't do enough. Is this simply a case of agents drumming up support for their players?

Prove me wrong, Mets!

Otani is a special case.

But I think the disappointment would be spending money in this market.

I'm sorry our young players struggled like young players their first time through the league. But the only way we are ever going to have stars is if we grow them, and the only way we are going to grow them is by running them out there and letting them play.

This is par for EVERY November. I don't know why folks continue to buy in, but this isn't a new tact. We were "in" on Robinson Cano, remember? Shin-Soo Choo was definitely our guy because he was an "Alderson Player", remember? Remember how after we signed Cuddyer (quick strike!) that opened us up to all of the higher-end "QO" free agents since the opportunity cost of the lost pick was lower (I remember some David Robertson rumors specifically). How many years in a row were we in the SS markets?

Its not until moves start happening and players start actually coming off the board that they walk back expectations due to higher than expected prices, not finding the right fit, trying to make a trade but nothing materializing, wanting to maintain roster flexibility, liking the guys we have in house, etc.

It would be nice to have young guys who look like they might develop rather than eat tehmselves out of the league. Or maybe we could draft/sign highly rated prospects who break in strong like guys on other teams.

The problem with Smith is that his ceiling might not be worth investing in.

I think the Mets are better off looking for veteran 1B that can introduce Smith's ceiling. That's Carlos Santana.

That didn't take long.

Well I mean they don't have the IP money to compete right? So it's all a pipe dream anyway
