Woo-hooo!!!!

Lets battle to the death on which mediocre prospect we may or may not protect and have a slim chance of potentially losing while they might be the last man on a bench of 7th man in a bullpen!!!!

Right now, 40 man roster is at 35.

I'll predict we take 6 - I know, whoa crazy crazy. (Guillorme, Bashlor, Uceta, Bautista, Jannis, Oswalt).

I've got us dropping Kevin McGowan to fit the extra man. And then I expect we'll see some sales/non tenders of pre-arb guys in the weeks ahead to fit future signings (Reynolds, Bradford, Robles, Sewald, Cecchini all look vulnerable).

I still don't get why we would protect Guillorme. He just isn't very good.

I expect we'll protect him, but Luis Guillorme playing for the Mets is a sign that things aren't going very well.

They're going to have to sign at least 2 free agents to roster contracts, possibly 3 or even 4, but as noted, they can make some cuts to the current 35.

I think they have to protect Guillorme, Bashlor & Bautista. I think a team might take Bautista and his velocity. Maybe they take a chance on losing Guillorme, but I think they like him. Uceta they might leave vulnerable. I think they can get away with that.

I understand the same arguments about not protecting Guillorme, but I don't agree. A team that needs a defensive SS could take him.

Well, keeping Guillorme and Reynolds both on the roster doesn't make much sense, so if they add LG, one would think they'll remove Reynolds.

We had some good teams with Rey Ordonez on them.

Stop it. You know they're never going to remove Reynolds. 25 years from now he's going to be blocking Wilmer Flores Jr.

Talk to me when we have Fonzie, Olerud and Ventura comps around Guillorme...

I think they see Guillorme and Reynolds differently. I do think Cecchini is a candidate to be sold or traded for something de minimis this offseason, as I think there's more overlap there in a light hitting backup MIF role. For some reason they think Reynolds is this super utility Joe McEwing type.

Guillorme gets added because he's got a major league skill. Its why Tomas Nido is on the 40 man roster. Its one of these things that everyone carries a defensive backup MIF, and everyone carries a backup C (duh) so while these guys are cheap and able to be shuttled they can be useful to a roster.

Well, the fascination with Reynolds aside, they're going to run up against a numbers crunch when they get to the point of adding a 2Bman &/or a 3Bman, at which point carrying all of Wright, Rosario, ACab, TJR, Flores, Reynolds, Guilorme, Cheech, new IFer 1, new IFer 2 just isn't going to fit all on the 40. They will need to thin the herd at that point with prob Cheech and Reynolds leading the thinning.

And even as TJR and Wright eventually get moved back to the 60, that prob opens a spot for Evans to get re-added but that won't be until April.

I agree with this, even though I see the players differently.

I think the mets like Guillorme, they like his glove and work ethic an see a potentially useful player.

I think they like Matt Reynolds ability to hit OK and play several spots, though he and Guillorme do overlap the backup SS position.

and I think they hope Cheech turns into a decent 2nd baseman with a big "Jury's still out" footnote.

and with TJ and Wilma, it's too too too too too many 2nd basemen and one too many backup SSs. But I'm not sure the mets have decided which guy will be the first to go. It's possible they all will be on the 40 come April. If they cut one, Reynolds would be my guess. A trade is possible but guys like those have very low trade value.
