This is a silly discussion.... but they had 5 of the 6 interviewees and some knew there was a 6th.

Those are pretty low standards if that is considered keeping the media out of the loop

I guess we got to start somewhere though

Always nice to stop by and see that things haven't changed. LOL.

Interesting hire - I'm with MJ, however: let's fix the lineup. Got lotsa holes to fill.

Peace out, folks...and try to play nice in the sandbox for goodness sakes!

Hold on. This misses what is being said here. Eventually the media reported it right but initially they got it almost all wrong. That is what I said. No need to twist this around.

Lol. I’m not trying to twist anything.

The media identified 5 of the intervieews as well as another one or two that declined interviews and some identified there being a 6th interview. I don’t think that’s getting it almost all wrong. The Mets might not have even been trying to keep the candidates secret, but if they were, the media did a solid job at getting the intel. And in the end even if the “winner” wasn’t who they guessed it would be last Friday or so it still leaked before the Mets official announcement.

Yeah we can praise the Mets for not immediately leaking they were “blown away” with Mickey’s interview and managing to keep that secret for a few days (especially if they had other interviews scheduled after Mickey). Probably wouldn’t be great for DeRosa (or whoever might’ve been at the end) to go into an interview after it was leaked the Mets love Callaway so much they won’t even bother with second interviews.

I'm really not sure what the confusion is about. I said that Carig and other beats reported this process incorrectly throughout. What is controversial about that? I posted Carig's piece on Oct 11th which stated 8 candidates on their "initial list" which was evidently not an initial list according to SA bc he said their initial list had some 35 names on it. So this was evidently already supposed to be a whittled down list. Well, only 3 of the 8 names on that list interviewed. And that list didn't even have the 2 that ended up the finalists (if you believe Acta was a finalist).

How is that not reporting the situation incorrectly? That reporting, which lots of the beats were going with, had most fans blathering on about Geren and Hale et al for days. It turned out to be misinformation. We're just stating facts here. Nothing more.

Probably not relevant, but Rotoworld:

Quote:

The Rays have hired Matt Quatraro as their new third base coach.

Quatraro has been the assistant hitting coach with the Indians for the past four seasons, but he has a history with the Rays both as a player and a coach in the minors. He'll replace Charlie Montoyo, who is making the switch to bench coach.

Sandy said they started with a list of 35. They interviewed 6. There were reports well before interviews started of an initial list. Not all of those were interviewed. They probably fell into the 29 under consideration, not interviewed. By the time they were in the process, 5 of the 6 candidates were widely reported. The favorite, first reported to be Long, then Acta, may have been intentional misdirection, or may have been someone trying to read tea leaves. Who knows. I think this argument is highly semantical. From the reports, sounds like Callaway really did "come from behind" and just blow them away, as he blew up the whole process. Guess we could've had someone clued into that better give us that tidbit Friday rather than the Acta leak, but whatever.

Don't think the fans were in the dark during this process much. If DeRosa was announced yesterday, that would've been a real surprise.

Perhaps Sandy found the leak in the FO and kept a few things from them to see if they were truly the leak, while feeding the stuff that was reported...

Who knows, it was pretty close to accurate...at least for that type of process that needs a lid on some information.

The next hires should be even more interesting...

Which is entirely consistent with what Carig reported 2 weeks ago:
Quote:
Despite a long list of candidates who have been linked to the opening, the team is expected to interview about a half dozen candidates to replace Terry Collins

He reported that they would actually interview about a half dozen names. Then he reported 8 names which a source said the initial list "included". That means it wasn't the whole list. And they weren't planning on interviewing all those names. He even said it was "unclear which of those" were being interviewed.

No one was ever saying Carig or any other reporter knows everything that goes on with the team. But when they report stuff for which they have sources (and especially multiple sources), it's usually correct.

Unless somone can prove one of the names he mentioned wasn't on the initial list of 35, then nothing in that story is inaccurate. Really, nothinng in that story was even a little misleading. If some misinterpreted, that really isn't Carig's fault.

Yeah, my point there was in line with your line of thinking in this thread, in case that wasn't clear.

Mets fans have an unusually "angry" attitude toward the sports writers that doesn't seem to exist within any other fanbases outside of Frank Isola. Not really sure what it is but I don't see Ranger, Yankee, Jet, Giant etc fans with as much anger/disdain for the writers (even when things are awful).

Is there really surprise there is animus toward Carig? The guy trashed Collins on his way out the door based on a bunch of unnamed sources... and as if the clubhouse of a 92 loss veteran purged team is going to be in perfect harmony. And on the heels of the team doing nothing to show Collins any gratitude on the way out the door as the season was winding down.

People with real cred such as Howie, Gary and David Wright rushed in to defend Collins. It's not like I am some big Collins fan but a story based on unnamed sources and "Collins didn't say hello to me" is not really worth much investment of energy IMO. Players being annoyed they didn't get enough playing time is one thing. Players should always be annoyed they are sitting for guys like Jose Reyes. But again, that has been discussed. Collins manages to win games, and you can't expect him to suppress that competitiveness. Breakdowns with the FO are something else, but they take two to tango. There is no evidence that any breakdown occurring between the dugout and the FO is the exclusive fault of the mgr.

As far as animus with other beat writers, I'm not really aware of much. I generally have a dim view of the whole lot but none really shakes me up much.
