It's the job of a reporter to dig and report. Whether it is good or bad. Not sure what you guys are debating.

He researched. He reported a tough story. It's the players that were presented poorly as well as Collins.

Then Carig got most of it right with the managerial hiring process.

And, it was especially Fred Wilpon who looked bad. The first half dozen paragraphs were really about Fred, and how he was the only one protecting Collins, or for that matter Warthen.

Then, the article goes on to say:
Quote:
On Wednesday, Collins’ final game at Citi Field this season passed without any public recognition for his place in franchise history. There will likely be no classy send-off for a manager who shepherded the Mets through a difficult rebuilding before the prosperity of consecutive playoff appearances in 2015 and 2016.

Instead, Collins has been forced to field questions about his uncertain future.

I don't think it was Carig's fault the Mets didn't do a better job of honoring Terry for his service. I think that was coming from the front office, and Carig simply reported it.

You can argue that some of the complaints about Terry's bullpen management, or whatever, were petty. But clearly those were things that people high up in the front office must have thought were important.

But in this case, it was clear that he intended to smear Collins, and there were plenty of people who bristled at that.

I think it's completely unjustified to suggest Carig intended to smear Collins.

At the time, it was not official that TC would not be returning. But it had been widely reported. All Carig did, was to ask, "why?" And then he reported the answers he got, from more than a dozen people connected to the Mets, including some who defended Collins.

I don't understand how, when so many people can say this story made the Mets look bad, not Collins, that you then argue that somehow Carig's intention was to make Collins look bad.

And which of those quotes would you have left out, if you were writing the story? I just don't think Carig slanted this, he wrote the story that was there.

I don't know how you can suggest this story doesn't make Collins look bad. It refers to the FO thinking he made "constant tactical blunders.". It also said that he was "difficult to communicate with" and one said "we were all miserable" and "ran players into the ground." There was even an "inmates ran the asylum" quote.

I think the only it didn't say about him was that he beat his wife. Then again it didn't say he didn't. But seriously, yes the article did spread the criticism around but it was especially harsh on how it portrayed Terry. Would others have come to his defense otherwise?

Can I know for sure that there was a particular axe to grind against TC? No i don't know if it was intentionally to smear him. But it does come off particularly bad for TC and a lot of it comes off as exaggeration and not his fault- running RPs into the ground bc the FO has given him no one reliable in 7 years.

Yes, but I think "what the front office perceived as Collins’ constant tactical blunders" was likely an accurate description of the front office's thinking. And "He has always been difficult to communicate with", "We were all miserable", and "the inmates ran the asylum a bit" were all direct quotes from players. Should he have left them out?

I think Carig did his best to provide context for those quotes, explaining how the front office had undermined Collins, and how trading away many key veterans he relied on had also helped to undercut him. Sure, some of those quotes were damaging to Collins, but I don't think that's what Carig set out to do.

I think he was mostly reporting the front office's thinking, almost 4 weeks ago now, including that Collins was likely to be gone, that Warthen was "on shaky ground as well", and that it was "unclear if Kevin Long would remain". And also that the Mets wanted "better cohesion between team executives and the manager’s office", and that they "would prefer a manager more receptive to analytics with a sense for using the modern bullpen."

And I think it was important to report that thinking, because that thinking is exactly what has been driving everything that has happened this month, including the hiring of Callaway. I think anyone who read that article carefully would likely understand why Callaway was seen as an attractive option by this front office. Callaway seems to be young, analytically inclined, with a reputation for being able to communicate well with younger players, and very much into modern bullpen management. And not known to be friendly with Fred.

Ahhh I miss the good ol days of threads being locked up when they’ve gone off the beaten tracks. Where are the mods of yesteryear? Chico would have locked this one up 5 pages ago.
