The fallacy in this is that there is a farm system to break up. The idea that there anyone in the farm system the team would dramatically miss is something the FO counts on people buying into in order to justify their inactivity. Aside from Peterson, there isn't anyone I'd care about losing TBH. The 6th pick in the next draft will more than make up for any losses, plus they'll net a sandwich pick from the 2019 draft.

On top of which, if they lay an egg for whatever reason, they can always re-deal Machado in July and recoup prospects then.

I'm just saying it's not a Sandy move, but it also feels kind of 2015-Padres to me too. We saw how well that worked out for them.

Everything the Wilpons touch turns to crap. The winter classic was awful because of the shadows and camera angles.

Saying "it would break our farm system" as a reason to not acquire Manny Machado is just craziness. This farm system is one of the worst in baseball. You can easily recoup talent who could be up or around the MLB ETA within a few years or so.

Much like any big name signing they hypothetically would've made, it energizes the fanbase. In those situations, you worry about it later. You now have a superstar in your clutches. Manny Machado jerseys, Manny Machado bobblehead day, Manny Machado tees (same for Cespedes, same for Syndergaard, deGrom, Conforto, Smith, Rosario, etc.). If it's a money grab, then Manny would be the guy to go get, no?

Not to go really crazy about it, but between Harvey, Familia, Blevins, Ramos, that's like $30 million, no? You can even fake make an offer to bring him back, I guess.

If you want to energize the fanbase then outbid the Yankees and the Dodgers for him when he's a free agent.

So when are all these remaining FA's going to sign? Must be the slowest moving free agent period ever.

We're better off signing Todd Frazier, looking to trade for a young CF and calling it a winter.

Cain would be a great fit in CF. What kind of contract is he likely to command? 4 for 72?

Omg, that would be a horrendous waste if limited resources. Cain would be lucky to get the Granderson deal.

Frankly, are we even sure Cain can out-play a Lagares/Nimmo platoon?

The Mets have approximately $60m in luxury cap space. If we had better owners, I bet you could convince the Marlins to take a lesser prospect package by taking on all of Prado's and Chen's contracts. Thats about $100m of salary relief for them over the next few years.
