This better be Sandy's most active offseason since he took over. He's getting closer to the retirement home.

Not sure what to say about this one. Obviously the numbers were baaaaad in 2017, but he was a good starter just 3 years ago. Nothing wrong with moves like this so long as they don't require roster spots and aren't your primary off-season moves. Guarantee him a few hundred thousand and a major league spring training invite and a release by May 1 if he's not on the roster, no problem.

Not sure where this belongs but Callaway on Mets Hot Stove said it’s not etched in stone that a starter is going to go twice thru the lineup and then get removed. It actually sounds like he plans on pushing the starters to even more innings than they have before

One thing is for sure, he's going to have these pitchers throw a helluva lot more curve balls. The indians were by far and away the best staff in terms of throwing the curve....This may help guys like Matz and Harvey specifically.

I read somewhere that he doesn't plan to mess with deGrom or Thor and their use of sliders - which is good. I don't care if he works with Matz, Wheeler and especially Harvey. Maybe he helps them.

Maybe a new approach will make a big difference - one can always hope.

Aaaaaaaaand we're back to "meaningful games in September."

An upgrade at second base also ranks among Alderson’s priorities, with sources indicating that the Mets will scour the trade market. Options such as the Reds’ Scooter Gennett appear to make the most sense; higher-profile choices such as the Marlins’ Dee Gordon might prove too expensive.

Quote:
The focus, however, clearly is on pitching. Though the Mets likely will not target a veteran starter, Alderson indicated that he will pursue bullpen help.

While the Mets won’t pursue top-of-the-market players such as Wade Davis, a source said arms in the tier below likely will be in play. That group includes Brandon Morrow, Mike Minor and Bryan Shaw.

All three would require the type of multiyear deals that Alderson typically has avoided with relievers, but it’s among some of the shifts that he seems more open to making. That includes potentially playing Juan Lagares in centerfield full-time, even though almost all of his value will come from defense.

Bolstering the bullpen takes on added importance with the Mets gearing up to shield most of their starters from facing a lineup more than twice in a game, as first reported by Newsday.

“The teams that have the discipline to do that are getting better results out of those starting pitchers,” Alderson said. “They have the discipline to do it and they have the bullpen capacity.”

Only took you 5 years to see where the trend in baseball was going. So frustrating.

Given the budget, this is one of the names I threw out there. Sign a few like this rather than spend something close to 10 figures on dreg like Jason Vargas. My god, if this group can't produce something similar to Jason Vargas for "free" at this point...I mean, come on.
