At the risk of quoting Cerrone:
Quote:
As a result, I get the feeling Alderson will jump the market and sign Vargas to a one-year deal and let the rest of the league wait around for Cobb and Lynn. It's possible Alderson can bait Cobb or Lynn by overpaying a bit, but that has never been his style. In fact, his style is quite the opposite.

In addition to Vargas or Cobb or Lynn, I also expect the Mets to bring in two or three veteran pitchers willing to accept minor league deals and invitations to spring training.

For instance, if free-agent pitcher Ubaldo Jiménez is forced to sign a minor-league deal, which is looking likely, I hear he's intrigued about reuniting with Mickey Callaway and joining the Mets. FanGraphs.com projects 1.6 WAR for Jiminez, who can pitch in relief or be a starting pitcher, which would make him a terrific low-risk, high-reward get in the days before pitchers and catchers...

Please no Vargas. If you're not going for Cobb, look at Jamie Garcia or his ilk.

Interesting note on Ubaldo. I'd be fine with him on a MiL deal.

Hellickson might not be a bad gamble, as someone recently said. Jaime Garcia is probably of similar ilk.

I like Ubaldo on a MiL deal.

I would take a shot at Ubaldo or Drew Hutchinson on minor league deals.

The #Rays take another flyer: Sign pitcher Evan Scribner to Minor league deal worth $800k if he makes big leagues with spring invite

I don't think you have to specify "minor league deal" for Drew Hutchinson.

He's basically a mediocre AAA rotation guy isn't he?

Yeah but when he first came up with Toronto a few years ago he showed a lot of potential. FWIW, for a team with such a bad farm system the Mets are very lax at signing minor league free agents this year.

Pretty much every pitcher on the market, except for Arrieta, are just as big of question marks as what we have in house. If we're not going to get Arrieta (which we aren't) then just sign the best reliever left and a few veteran SPs on minor league deals for more depth.

Praytell, when have the Mets ever been anything but lax when it came to adding players to the organization?

Well I really can't argue against that. Even when it comes to cheap minor league signings they sit back and wait for the scraps.

Roster management at large has been a glaring organizational weakness dating back to at least the Omar days.

It might just be dumb luck, but I challenge anyone to name a team that signed as many WAR as these players gave, in the 2010s. All three were minor league or 40 man roster pickups:

RA Dickey
Marlon Byrd
Justin Turner (granted they let him walk before he became a stud)
