Jason Vargas throws an 85 mph "fast"ball and missed most of 2015-2016, so understood why he's not hugely popular, but I think many (I know I was) would be surprised to see the consistent back-end effectiveness he has shown since 2010 (when he was put in Seattle's rotation full time).

He's basically a lock to give the 2014-2016 Colon-type effectiveness when he's out there.

Given we paid, what, 3/30 for Colon, if they end up with Vargas on a low-base 1 year deal, thats probably pretty good. Not sexy, of course, but I think its a better play than a Cashner, despite the difference in stuff, given Cashner's ever present health issues and up and down effectiveness. And still think Cashner is holding out for much more than Vargas - wasn't Texas reportedly on the fence about a QO with him? He signed a 1/10 deal last year coming off an awful year, so have to think he's holding out for at least that.

I don't get the disapproval of Vargas.

He was great for the first half of last year and then hit a wall. Probably becaus body wasn't used to a full season anymore.

I would be thrilled with the Mets adding him for a year or two.

2 years would be ridiculous unless it was an insanely small salary. Sorry but you can't just pretend his final 15 starts didn't happen (or that the Mets would move on if he were bad with a 2 year deal) he's 35. 1 year or absolutely no thanks.

Agree here. And not just because I want Lynn or Cobb. Give me Jamie Garcia or some MiL deals (Ubaldo, etc.) instead of Vargas. His second half was atrocious.

Imagine the other NY team in our situation with $50m below the luxury tax. They would sign Arrieta and Watson in a heartbeat. So frustrating.

Should have signed JDM instead of Bruce. We can start with that.

DiComo makes his first OD Roster prediction.

He has them going with only Nimmo as an OF backup and 8 relievers: the big 4, plus Montero, Robles, Sewald and Matt Purke.

I hope we are still searching for relievers.

Vargas through his first 16 starts in 2017:

101.1 IP, batting line against: .237/.285/.347/.632

3.08 K/BB and 2.22 ERA.

He couldn't sustain that, but the guy still knows how to get outs.

I'm a velocity guy. Especially if the baseball is juiced. I saw enough soft tossers in the Mets depleted rotation last year that if given a choice I go with the high velocity guy. The only way the Mets should bring Vargas in is only a reliever or on a minor league deal (which I'm pretty sure he's going to get a major league deal from some one).

Oh boy, Opening Day roster predictions already? Not like the roster doesn't start changing continually almost immediately.

Sign Watson. Go with 7 relievers. One of Montero/Gsellman/Lugo, one of Sewald/Robles.

Do the Mets cut A-Gone and sign Duda if his price has dropped into the 1 year, 5 or less million range?

No.

$575k < $5m.
