Sadly, this is pretty accurate. If you look at Fangraphs' depth chart standings, the Cardinals stand out as clear Wild Card favorites; after that, it's a muddled group of teams that, as currently constructed, project to win anywhere between 79 and 84 wins (the Mets being one of those teams). When you have a roster like this you either go two ways: push the chips in to try and jump ahead of the pack or concede that the risks of investing additional resources into this group outweigh the potential gains, so you break it all down and enter a rebuild. But the worst thing you can do is just sit on your hands and let yourself twist in the winds of mediocrity. Although it's only December 19th, it does certainly feel like the Mets are choosing that last path.

But frankly young talent and health have been our only chance all along.

Was Zack Cozart really a game-changer?

He was worth 5 wins last season.

Is Cespedes a game-changer?

2017 Cespedes OBP: .352; SLG: .540
2017 Cozart OBP: .385; SLG: .548

He was here.

Let's see Cozart put the Angels on his back.

None in our price range.

Or if you have a price range.

That's why the only way we're ever going to have impact player is by growing them from the ground up.

A Cozart signing wouldn't have precluded "growing them" concurrently.

Waiting around to find one player that can "carry a team" is not a winning strategy. The Mets need to fortify their supporting cast in order to add marginal wins.

An infield of Gonzalez/Cabrera/Rosario/Cozart doesn't scream win-now.

So we should only acquire players that "put teams on their back." I understand the Reds were a bad team last year but so were the Mets with Cespedes. So were the Marlins for that matter, with Stanton.
