I don't think you have to rebuild with this potential healthy starting pitching. What they should be looking for is younger long-term solutions instead of constantly plugging in cheap veterans in an attempt to turn your 82 win team into an 84 win team and learning nothing in the process.

The problem is they have done such a poor job drafting/developing players that it makes it tough to add these guys and then add in a GM that moves at a snails pace it's almost impossible. Trust me, I agree. Somehow other teams make deals for guys like Hicks, or Didi, Chris Taylor or Brad Miller or whomever.. guys who maybe performed in the minors and have talent but haven't broken out.. not this team. Adrian Gonzalez? Mike Napoli? With a straight face they want us to believe that having TOO MANY solid players is going to be a bad thing "don't wanna block Dom with a guy who might actually be good enough to do so". In addition...Kipnis, Kinsler... why aren't they looking at younger, longer term options? Even if they want to sell us on suddenly believing in Dom Smith long term... who is this 2b "Dom Smith" we are concerned about blocking?

Martin Perez will miss the first month of the season with elbow surgery (non-throwing) after being injured by a bull on his ranch

And the idea that it would just be so damaging to the long term success of the franchise to trade a package of prospects for a Merrifield is laughable... like the prospects they would lose would be so impactful... they'd never recover! Please.

I think this could certainly move them to add another SPer using Profar. Profar for Monty makes some sense, swapping 2 players who are out of options.

You can assume the Mets are among teams kicking around idea of pursuing long-time All-Star Adrian Gonzalez. They're looking for a short-term add-on at the position; when healthy, he's a good hitter/defender; was just cut by ATL, and costs nothing more than minimum salary in '18.

The Adrian Gonzalez rumors make me think of these:

These always work out really well.

Someone on the Mets will top that. I guarantee it.

Gonzalez may indeed be washed up but he was solid in 2016 (2 win player) and very good prior so there's at least some hope.

Not to be "that guy," but why are we still updating the winter meetings thread?

Well, I guess I just was "that guy."

Thats an extremely romantic view of a ~replacement level season where we regularly played a 41 yr old on a non-competing team who walked out when he wasn't given an extension.

Actually seems to be the likeliest outcome if we sign AGon - not terrible enough to just cut, but bad enough that while losing 90 game anyway you're doing anything to help the long term and then, like the Dodgers, ending with him walking out when we don't make a longer term commitment to him.
