Sheffield hit very well. Poor in the outfield, though.

Thats an extremely romantic view of a ~replacement level season where we regularly played a 41 yr old on a non-competing team who walked out when he wasn't given an extension.

Actually seems to be the likeliest outcome if we sign AGon - not terrible enough to just cut, but bad enough that while losing 90 game anyway you're doing anything to help the long term and then, like the Dodgers, ending with him walking out when we don't make a longer term commitment to him.

Didn't say anything about the circumstances. Just saying he hit well. .823 OPS.

Left a WS caliber team (that he had been with for years) when Bellinger took his job... what happens if/when Dom starts taking more playing time than he would like?

Maybe it's spin, but this article with quotes from players and front office makes it seem to not have been a big deal:

More recent report (6 days after yours) was that after he left and pouted, team didn't want him back to hang around. He then of course returned for WS and started dressing, warming up, etc. which was in violation of team rules (only active + taxi squad were supposed to be in uniform) and players complained to Roberts. Roberts then had to tell AGon, basically, they don't want you here.

Regardless, it's sort of a 'who cares?' thing. If he came here and looked good in ST and was productive this season, no one will give a shnit that there was some tension there in LA. It's not like that is going to make him play poorly now.

True, but I can see the comparison with Dom here (although I would pray that Dom could become half the hitter Bellinger is).

If you put Dom and AGone side by side, their swings are nearly identical. Might not be an awful idea to have Dom caddy for AGone for a ST.

Young controllable talent wins. Houston, Cubs, Boston, etc...

But you have to be patient with them and not shuffle PT to veterans because you are worried they aren't Kris Bryant.

I thought adding A veteran like Grandy was good, but then compounded with a slew of other vets you never get to see Conforto types develop.

Who knows what Nimmo and Cecchini might have done given the opportunity...now Dom is getting the bad vibes.

Adding a veteran OF, like a veteran pitcher, is never a bad idea because there's always flexibility in spots where you roster multiple guys with similar skills. Or a veteran backup C. Etc.

Adding a veteran 1B-only, if he's not any good, is silly, because there's no reasonable roster construction that has Dom and AGon playing together on same team, so this supposed mentorship would be virtual via Dom skyping from Vegas.

I'm not a Dom fan, admittedly. But I don't think AGon gets us any closer to contention in 2018, so I am really struggling to see the point. You can't even use the mentorship excuse that they are surely queueing up for Reyes' triumphant return to the IF given all the Rosario quotes out there.

Agree about Gonzalez, specifically, but in general as well.

If they can get someone like a Pollock/Cain where we have no true caddy, or a true third baseman who is youngish and controllable, I think that is the more prudent path.

If Dom bombs, and I doubt he will, there are plenty of first basemen types who will be available.

Grabbing a 1B only guy seems like poor roster management, especially if he's a vet. Grab a guy who can play the corners and 1B if Smith needs more seasoning. Flores is on the roster and he can play 1B in a pinch but in the sense that you feel Flores is mostly getting AB's against lefties, you're more hedging against Conforto's health early in the season.

I honestly would not want AGone here.

We'll get some more back when we ship out deGrom and Syndergaard this summer.
