Yeah it means they'll be right back in this jam a year from now.

The beauty of preferring short term deals. We're always just 12 month cycle away from the same stories, same shock at prices, same lowering of expectations, same incomplete offseasons, same discussions of flexibility in season, same holes in season, same discussion of offseason plan, same stories, same shock at prices, same lower....

Hopefully they are smart enough to give Familia and Ramos qualifying offers so we at least get draft picks back.

Ramos isn't a QO guy. He's closer to a 2-14, maybe 3-24 off a good year. offering him 1-18 or whatever the QO comes to would be dumb.

Familia - maybe, but he needs a good year this year.

I think it comes down to a similar situation to last year. If the Mets are good, they'll fight for playoffs. If they aren't, they'll have a sell-off and Ramos, Familia & Blevins will be the 3 guys they look to sell. I'm less worried about 2019 cause it's such an open book right now. Too hard to forecast.

Sandy Alderson indicated the Mets are likely moving onto other areas (2B, 1B/OF). The team is not actively looking for another reliever beyond Anthony Swarzak.

HAHAHAHA of course not. Hansel Robles has a great fastball spin rate!

Spins right over the fence.

:-)

I like our Pen well enough.

Familia - closer, has his scary moments but he's a legit closer. I don't think last year's health issue will repeat.

Ramos - Marlins fans sometimes called him the Heart Attack. He has his moments but he can also walk the park. 4.8 career walks per 9. Yikes. He can be tough to hit though.

Swarzak - doesn't walk the park but he's homer prone. That's his weakness. Citi is probably a good park for him.

Blevens is a legit lefty. Those 4 are solid. Not perfect, but solid.

After that, there's enough of a collection in the mix that I think our Pen could be OK.

Ramos, Smith (not on the 40 yet, could be an early add), Rhame, Bashlor, Bradford, Callahan, McGowan, Robles, Sewald, Smoker. (And Batista, but I think he's further away). There's enough depth that spots 5-7 (5-8?) on the pen don't worry me.

I think our Pen is OK.

I know I'm going to regret saying this probably but I think Black Bear can be an effective middle reliever. He seemed to adapt the best out of all the callups last year (not including Sewald who is a lock imo).

Which one is Black Bear? Smoker or Bradford?

Smoker is Brown Bear (I had to look it up).

I think the pen will be fine if at least two of Sewald/Bradford/Smoker/Rhame/Callahan take a significant step forward. A big if, but also a reasonable chance it happens.

I agree with this. Digesting Swarcak over getting some of the other names like Shaw, etc...pen should be solid if not good.

Other holes are more glaring to me.

Well, lets take these guys at their word that the significant bullpen additions are done. The sell-off of a guy who looked like a potential major league quality arm in the Rule 5 today may say differently (as there are a ton of potential openings, as we'll get to), but lets assume.

3 of those 5 will open in the pen, presumably. I'm going to assume Montero goes in some sort of 40 man roster spot sell-off (as he was apparently a name discussed in the Kinsler "dump"-type negotiations, maybe the same in Kipnis), and assume for now Robles stays and is "in."

Sandy and Callaway have said 8 man pen. So there's 5 spots with the 3 in house guys+ Swarzak. Smoker should be "in" as 2nd lefty. 2 of Sewald/Bradford (most likely) + Rhame/Callahan if injuries or otherwise strike. I guess McGowan is in that mix too.
