The Rays will take back a player in a Longoria deal. They're probably negotiating over whether that's going to be Span or Pence.

Longoria to the Giants per Marc Topkin.

Arroyo struggled during his MLB debut but this looks like a steep price given Longoria's contract (have to assume Rays would be eating cash/taking back salary)

Source: Giants get Evan Longoria for Christian Arroyo, Denard Span, Matt Krook and Stephen Woods.

I don't think Christian Arroyo is going to hit for any power but I do think he's going to hit a ton, enough to play everyday somewhere on the infield. Arroyo doesn't project as a shortstop, but TB has been more forgiving about SS defense than other orgs (Robertson, etc.).

Krook has huge stuff - mid-90s, plus slider and curveball - but has a long history of injury and wildness. Stephen Woods was irredeemably wild in college but he's improved his strike throwing to a point of viability. Sits 92-94 with a plus curveball. Both relief prospects.

Give it a week or 2 and we'll hear how the Mets were "totally in" on this, were willing to assume the $$ to lessen the return, etc. "Veeeeeeery close" to making the deal.

Guarantee this was Tampa and/or outside folks trying to make a logical connection, not the Mets expressing any interest whatsoever in a guy that 1) Makes them publicly acknowledge the end of DW, 2) has 5 years remaining on his contract - at whatever cost and 3) would cost them prospects and they don't have them - regardless of whether he's still any good or not.

Whatever you think of Arroyo (and I think he's pretty easily a big league regular AND is MLB ready or very close to it) MLB.com has him their #1 prospect, Krook #25 (with PLUS PLUS pure stuff), and Woods unranked but good career numbers, considered to have a good FB and "above average" CB and currently still a starter... I'd be pretty sick if we gave up that much for Longoria given the fact we KNOW if he's in severe decline they won't move on for YEARS and will be an anchor.

Giants in on Jay Bruce.

Giants desperately needed a 3B but same idea I brought up yesterday with regards to wiser alternatives to Longoria still applies to them. And it seems like they gave up quite a bit to boot. I never thought our supposed interest was genuine but I'm glad he's "officially" off the radar now. Hopefully they do us another favor and sign Jay Bruce next.

Jeff thinks Gimenez beats Arroyo (and he wouldn't have done it) but basically the Mets did not matchup well with what the Rays wanted/received.
