I'm the person in the Mets front office who calls the beat writers after another team trades for a guy and says "we were also talking about trading for that guy."

Jeff thinks Gimenez beats Arroyo (and he wouldn't have done it) but basically the Mets did not matchup well with what the Rays wanted/received.

The Mets aren't "not doing" this Longoria deal to spare Gimenez. The Mets aren't in this Longoria deal bc having one declining 3Bman owed a ton of coin is enough without taking on another one. Made no sense for the Mets to take on 5 expensive years of a declining Longoria at already 32. For a team with less financial constraints like the Giants, it's a bit more justifiable. It was never a serious option here.

Whatever you think of Arroyo (and I think he's pretty easily a big league regular AND is MLB ready or very close to it) MLB.com has him their #1 prospect, Krook #25 (with PLUS PLUS pure stuff), and Woods unranked but good career numbers, considered to have a good FB and "above average" CB and currently still a starter... I'd be pretty sick if we gave up that much for Longoria given the fact we KNOW if he's in severe decline they won't move on for YEARS and will be an anchor.

Well they gave up that much because they seemingly pulled a "Mets" and prioritized cash over talent.

Dumped Span PLUS are getting money back.

Sure but do you think the Mets were suddenly going to go "okay we will take all 85 million"?

But they are taking on a ton of salary.

Per Chapter 5 of the future Baseball Maverick 2: How Sandy Once Again Saved The Mets, they were absolutely willing to do so, and "really close" to making this deal.

Relative term.

Edit: what Eno says:

Eno Sarris @enosarris

The Giants stayed under the cap with this deal and got better for 2018, tough trick to pull. They don’t have a young core that’s getting better, but they are also projected to have ~$50 million of cap room and reset penalties in 2019. Bumgarner FA 2020. You do the best you can.

I think 2018 money was more important to them than future cash.

Post-Longoria trade, Giants now project at 75.0 wins and have the game's 29th-best farm system. Also, depending on calculation, possibly MLB's highest payroll.

Oof. Fangraphs' depth chart standings are a bit more forgiving (81 wins), but still..

Thing is that they are totally pot-committed. Everyone there is making a lot of money so they owe it to themselves to take one last shot with this group. If it doesn't work, they could get a lot by trading Bumgarner alone middle of this year. Would be painful but may be forced to...

#Rays got the #Giants best prospect for Longoria (among others). For context, that’s basically Rosario from the #Mets, and more, which they do not have in quality.

Thats not a great job of providing context by Mr. Baron.

#1 The consensus is Ramos is legit their top guy and the player "everyone" wants. #2 Taking the term "top prospect" and simply assigning "well he's #1 on their list and he's #1 on our list, they are equals" is beyond lazy.

Isn't Baron a photographer? Can we see what the WLNY meteorologist has to say about this while we're at it?
