Thought this might be a shift from the negative. You are Sandy with $10m (and you have to spend it)...

My take:
1. See if Todd Frazier takes it. Not my choice, but it makes sense as a third baseman/caddy for Dom/insurance for Wright thing.
2. See if you can move Ramos for a CF in a cash neutral-ish deal. Everyone knows I am a Pollock guy, but not sure that is possible. (No Span)

I just don't understand, jdawg. The Wilpons are blessed with a terrific starting staff, when healthy, of course. They have a serviceable bullpen now with the addition of Swarzak. You have a couple solid position players in Ces, Conforto (if he's healthy), Wilmer, and a budding rookie in Rosario. You know you're going to be behind the Nats, Dodgers, Cubs, etc... with the team as it stands. The team is based in the Big Apple. There are two stud free agents, either in or entering their primes, on the market that are unsigned in positions desperately in need of an upgrade (30 year old J.D. Martinez and 28 year old Eric Hosmer). You put these two guys on the field with your current roster and you've made yourself a contender for the NL crown. I suppose if you feel like you have something in Dom Smith and want to give him a shot at the 1B job for the next couple of years at league minimum, OK, I get it. But Martinez, to me, is a no brainer. Granderson, and his $15 million per year, is gone. Neil Walker, and his $17 million, is off the books. So is Duda's $7 million and Jay Bruce's $13 million. Our offense needs alotta meat. J.D.'s still young enough to give you many productive years. Even if you give him a 5/$120, I think you're getting nearly the same production out of him in the last year as the first. But the Wilpons are content floundering around/under .500 for the forseeable future. Frustrating.

It's simply the reality, Dog. They aren't going to change the business model.

However, the limit is probably $8m after adding Minaya...

10 million makes it tough.

Have to commit to Lagares in CF in that case (likely to be a 3-win player purely with his glove) and assume Conforto will be ready by Opening Day or at least some time in April.

Trade Harvey and a prospect for Brach.
Trade Ramos and a prospect for Kipnis and cash to make it cash-neutral.
Sign Bruce to a back-loaded 3 year deal.
Sign Tony Watson as the final bullpen piece.

C- d'Arnaud
1B- Dom/Flores
2B- Kipnis
3B- Cabrera
SS- Rosario
LF- Cespedes
CF- Conforto
RF- Bruce

BN- Lagares (lots of playing time if Conforto is out and if Dom struggles and Bruce is slid over to 1B)
BN- Nimmo
BN- Plawecki
BN- Cheech

SP- deGrom
SP- Thor
SP- Matz
SP- Wheeler
SP- Gsellman/Lugo

CL- Familia
RHP- Brach
RHP- Swarzak
RHP- Robles
Long- Lugo/Gsellman
LHP- Blevins
LHP- Watson

My guess is that some spending hinges on moving Harvey, Lagares and/or Ramos.

How could this possibly work out to $10m total??

First 2 are cash neutral and Bruce/Watson only equal $10m???

(and again, Orioles are not trading one of their good relievers for Harvey! They've already said that, plus now they lost Britton).

The Bruce deal is very backloaded lol. Let's say 6-19-20.

If you only have $10m to spend, you have to first open up more.

- Cut Harvey now. I forget exactly how this works but I believe we're only on the hook for 1/6th of his ~6m expected salary. You're not going to get a better return than that $5m savings, and he's no better of a bet than Seth Lugo or Gsellman in that 5th spot anyway. Stupid decision to tender him in the first place if you had no money.

- I can't deal Ramos because I have no way to replace him without using up my budget, and the whole plan is predicated upon improving the bullpen to cover for the rotation. If you dump Ramos, the pen is worse than last year.

- Trade something limited for Brad Miller, projected to make about $4m in arbitration and not likely to cost much - give a lottery ticket A ball arm (flip Ryder Ryan?). Can be controlled thru 2019, may be bad, but probably gives you more upside at less cost than alternatives there.

- Sign Duda to a 1 year, $7m deal (seems to be going rate).

- Sign one more reliever to a big league deal (I think I have like $4m left to spend) - I'll say The Final Boss- and a whole littany of dudes to minor league deals coming off bad seasons (Neftali Feliz, Bruce Rondon, Sergio Romo, Carlos Torres, Zach Duke, Travis Wood - for relief - all guys I could see being looking for camp invites when the dust clears).

- Pray pray pray for Conforto health.
