People are upset about this? Omar knows talent and oddly convinced the Wilpons to actually allow pursuit of bigger name/expensive players. Happy he's back.

Omar Minaya returning to Mets as a special assistant to the GM is an example of Fred Wilpon’s fingerprints being all over a move. Per a source, Fred Wilpon made this decision despite some serious reservations from the front office.

Its a coup!! Yes, finally something exciting around these parts!!!

If the argument is the Mets became a dumpster fire under Omar, I will counter they are headed down the same path - but Omar's path was a hell of a lot more fun along the way. If we're going to be terrible, lets have some clubhouse fights, some testy press conferences and Omar's patented "double down on red" strategy to try to right the sinking ship, rather than the sad whisper we're currently going down with, with Sandy popping out every so often to remind us how bad we are and there's basically nothing to do be done about it except acceptance.

From his recent quotes, I'm almost curious whether he was lobby for this Omar gig.

I....don't think this is a compliment.

Lots of people “know talent.” Why must the Wilpons always use these old familiar retreads as pacifiers? It’s pathetic and totally tone deaf to do this.

Also, its a bit of wishful thinking to think Omar is going to convince the Wilpons to spend more.

If it was Fred's decision to hire Omar, I seriously doubt he was hired to convince Fred to spend more...

Yeah, I'm not too concerned about some of Sandy's people not liking this move. I think thats sort of the idea.

From yesterday:

Quote:
The way the Mets have operated under Wilpon ownership is that the general manager receives a general payroll number — this year it will be in the mid-$130 millions, from what I have deduced in conversations with people inside and outside the organization. But the Wilpons then tell their GM to come to them with any deal he likes regardless of cost and sell the merits, and that leaves open the possibility of increasing payroll

If this has "always been the way" - seems one was much better at it than the other.

This totally ignores the fact the so-called convincing happened BEFORE Madoff and BEFORE the massive debts they took on for Citi and SNY. Its not even remotely comparable.
