Actually, the Mets got Sandy'd.

The more I think about it, this might be the worst allocation of assets in the Sandy Era, and is possibly Jason Bay part 2.

For perhaps $3-5m per year, they could have had Cain.
For $20 million less over 3 years, they could have likely had Cargo.

For Likely the same price over three years, they could probably have had Frazier AND Reed.

And now Nimmo becomes marginal again.

Yeah, and quite possibly Dom Smith too. I don't know why they waste the effort in the draft if they keep blocking these guys. Now that's Nimmo, Cheech and Smith - the team's first three 1st round draft picks - effectively cut off now... well, possibly not Smith. But this can't be good for Smith. Put it this way, this either compromises the OF defense or blocks Smith... one of the other.

They needed a solid OF It was a good move.

More good moves still necessary

Even this tepid note way overstates the OF pipeline.

Lindsey is years away if he ever even is a thing - 30% K rates in low minors doesn't usually portend great things - well after the current crop or any realistic target would be gone.

Kaczmarski is maybe a 5th OF. I like him, and anything he gives you at all is a nice return on the 10K or whatever we spent on him, but he's already 26 - he's to future OF plans what TJ Rivera would have been to future IF plans 2 years ago - not someone you plan around.

There is NOTHING to plan for as far as blocking guys in the near-term.

When was Nimmo not marginal? He can't play CF regularly anyway (is he even a better corner OF than Bruce?), so even without Bruce, he's only a placeholder for Conforto. His role is an extra OFer/bat off the bench - which could be a very good role for him and us as he obviously has on base skills, but the totality of the skills is too incomplete for him to be a starter here.

I don't think his role has changed - at least not his ideal role - at all. The change is we won't have to force him into the lineup with Matt Reynolds as the top back OFer for the first 6 weeks of the season anymor e- thats a good thing.

Point is simply that cutting off playing time opportunities is a sure way to limit any possible improvement from these players... players the org invested years in developing.

And it's not only about the possible dividends these drafted players could pay, there is a direct correlation to the construction of future rosters and direct payroll implications. The less this org develops cheap functioning players, the harder it is to actively pursue players making real money.

They're paying him 13 million per year on average. You're not getting Frazier and Reed combined for that.

He won't get it, but there's no real reason why Reed shouldn't get Wade Davis money.

3 years younger, too.

Frazier and Reed, even in down market, should cost about $20m per.

I was pumped with the Bruce signing yesterday, but reading this thread, so many questions. I wonder what Cain will eventually sign for.

Sounds like the Giants offer was 3/30. Basically the Mets had to pay a $3m/yr premium for Bruce to "want" to come back.

Not True He wasn't signing for 3/30 with anyone

3/39 was the "get it done" price. for the Mets or the Jays or whoever
