Just for fun, and perhaps cause I have too much time on my hands sometimes. I went through baseball-ref and pulled the Mets pitching war by year. (maybe this can be done easier on Fangraphs but I like baseball-ref. I like their layout).

Anyhoo - this is what it works out to. Season, Combined War of pitchers and wins (with notes for playoffs and strike shortened seasons), and top pitchers.

2017 5.4 70 deGrom 4.4, Reed 1.8, Blevens 1.5

Playoff seasons are bolded.

I found 1996 interesting, the only year they had a negative war pitching, but that was also the year they got big seasons from Lance Johnson, Bernard Gilkey and Todd Hundley, so the offense helped make up for it.

Their top 2 seasons by pitching war were 1974 and 2016. Just 71 wins in 1974, same number of wins as their worst pitching season 1996.

Their combined 5.4 war in 2017 was the lowest since 1996 and excluding 1996, the lowest since 1966.

The 11 years they've had a team pitching war above 20 they've made the playoffs 5 times. It clearly helps, but good pitching isn't a guarantee.

The 17 years with a team pitching war above 18, they've made the playoffs just 6 times. The lowest team WAR for pitching they had while making the playoffs was 2006 with 14.4, but they had great hitting in 2006.

2000 and 2015, both world series years, they had a 16.7 and a 16.3 team pitching WAR, good for 19th and 20th in team ranking. Above average, but not stellar.

- - - anyhoo.

Just thought I'd throw this out there. comments welcome (though this being a message board, comments welcome is somewhat moot I suppose).

Mets would gain about 10 wins this year just from a bounce back to a decent 15 WAR performance. And good evidence in history that such bounce backs do sometimes happen.

Looking at the history, you can see that 77-83 were the lean years. For pitching though, 2007-2014 was even worse. In fact 2011-2014 was the worst 4-year total for pitching WAR since 1967. And 2009-2014 was the worst 6-year total. And 92-97 was a bad stretch as well, that was the worst 5-year total since 1967.
