The fact that he mustered just 3 homers in 231 ABs last year in the most prolific home run season in MLB history is quite worrisome.

Minor league contract, $2.5M if he makes team seems reasonable.

Waste of a roster spot. I'd rather just see what Smith can do than sign someone at Gonzalez's age who is clearly on the decline.

Considering he's making the minimum, this is a no-lose proposition. Within that, I really hope they aren't afraid to dump him because of some misplaced sense of his reputation if he's not performing.

It’s a major league deal. So that tells what you need to know about Dom.

He’s quite likely to do what i expected Dom to do this year so I dont think we’re getting worse. I just worry about them playing this as a major add.

I don't know that a major league deal for a guy who makes the minimum while having the difference paid by another team necessarily means that much. They can cut him in April and all they did was pay the minimum.

So... is he going to be a mentor for Dom Smith?

I get Duda, but not this move.

Dom's swing is an absolute clone of AGone's so it's not a surprise that he's being put in a position to mentor Smith.

Dom at least has upside. I'm not seeing it with Gonzalez.

Mentor him from NY to Vegas?

A 1 year deal is never about upside. With AG it's about whatever he has left and if he can be of any help to Dom.

I'm fine with Gonzalez as a mentor. I'm OK with giving him a month or 6 weeks if Dom isn't ready. I just hope this (and Reyes) aren't the last moves. I hope they aim a little higher than that.

The idea that he's here to mentor Dom Smith is hilarious.

He's here to be the starting 1B, and Sandy and Co. Will do everything in their power to appease him. If the kid is just better he'll take his toys and go home.
