The idea that he's here to mentor Dom Smith is hilarious.

He's here to be the starting 1B, and Sandy and Co. Will do everything in their power to appease him. If the kid is just better he'll take his toys and go home.

Yeah, I somehow have a fear that I shouldn't have to have that this move is geared towards driving gate receipts (which is insane).

It’s a major league deal. So that tells what you need to know about Dom.

He’s quite likely to do what i expected Dom to do this year so I dont think we’re getting worse. I just worry about them playing this as a major add.

I think that tells you what you need to know about Sandy.

Signing a washed up, injury prone player who can no longer field or hit, who's a known cancer in the clubhouse and who would block one of your few promising young players if he starts?

I don't think he stands in anyone's way. He knows coming in that he will only be the first baseman if the kid totally fails. His role is insurance to the team and a last chance to the player. For $550,000 this is hardly a bad move. I am totally fine with it.

I wouldn't have problem with a competition if I didn't think the game wasn't completely rigged.

Unless Gonzalez goes 3 for 40 this Spring he's your Opening Day 1B.

Where is the mentorship thing coming from?

They can’t possibly carry both. And the time they will be together March) they’re competing for 1 roster spot.

There’s no mentorship here- competition/pushing Smith maybe.

Why in the world would they need to appease him? The appeasement game is played when there is a sizable financial commitment involved. They owe him nothing in this case.

He used to be Adrian Gonzalez.

They have to treat him like he still is.

Would have expected this kind of signing a bit closer to spring training. But hopefully he gives us something to root for. Roll of the dice here.

Now there are two 40 spots to clear, so maybe a real deal is in the works.

Other than Bruce who I like (and even he's more of the same for Sandyball) this offseason's been one big troll.

I actually agree with this. I'd be fine with a PTO or whatever they call a non-roster camp invite in baseball but giving a rotted corpse of what used to be Adrian Gonzalez a ML deal just shows everything we need to know about what the Mets think of Dom.
