I have no reason to doubt that Gonzalez is not a "character" guy.
My only point here is that the character stuff is completely meaningless as regards wins and losses. I wonder how many MLB players have participated in more wins than Gonzalez over the past 10 years?
His teams have won 90 games or more in 7 of the last 8 years.

It's not meaningless if you extract much more enjoyment from rooting for good people. If all you care about is that whoever wears that laundry that particular year wins, then it's meaningless.

That said, I apparently know less about Gonzalez' bad rep than most here so, for now, I'm open-minded.

Yeah I don't care about the character concerns. On the field, Gonzalez seems washed up. I would be okay with Duda over Smith or Bruce over Smith because they're proven and in their primes, but Gonzalez over Smith seems to be capping the upside of what we can expect out of 1B.

You COULD have Dom and A-Gon on the roster. Dom the starting 1B, A-Gon is a power bat off the bench. One thing this team has kind of lacked the past couple of years has been legit bats coming off the bench in late-game situations.

8th inning, down a run, it's nice to have Flores lined up against LHP or A-Gon lined up against righties.

I only care about off field concerns for as far as people trying to claim mentorship.

Like the move don’t like the move- but don’t create a narrative to justify why it’s OK that’s just not reality.

Even in the madeup world where AGon didn’t bitch about this exact role a few months ago- with a presumed 4 man bench they can’t carry a 1B only bench player.

Yea, 100% they guaranteed him the 1B job out of the gate. No way he comes here or do they give him major league deal otherwise.

When did Gonzalez complain about being in a bench role? According to this article by the LA Times, he actually WANTED to be in a bench role in the postseason, he just didn't make the roster: http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/l ... story.html

He complained about it during the season when he came back from an injury. He expected the Dodgers to bench Bellinger who was tearing the cover off the ball. Just because he was "content" to sit on the bench during the postseason (and I'm sure there were financial reason's he made that choice) doesn't mean he would be content sitting for 162 games. With that all being said though, last year was his first sign of "being finished" and he was battling a bad back. It could be if his back is healthy he could contribute more than we think he can. But yeah truthfully I'm not happy with the Mets bringing in a player that expected the Dodgers to bench a guy that was tearing the cover off the ball for him. That's really the pinnacle of selfishness.

When you're consistently hitting .280-25-100 with a .360 OBP you can be a bit jerkish. Not when you're over the hill and won't stay healthy anyway. And last year's Dodgers did pretty well without him mattering.

If AG's back is better, he might be useful. But agree w/ the notion that the Mets brass aren't enamored with Dom's skills.

Dom likely starts the year in Vegas.

What has he done to deserve otherwise?

He's performed pretty well at all levels of the minors and usually gets off to a rough start at each level. I'm not his biggest fan and would like to have seen Duda return but I think Smith definitely has more upside at this point than A-Gone. Even in Gonzalez's last healthy season, he had merely a .784 OPS.

And he got his call up and basically failed. Now he can get back to working hard and earn a second chance that hopefully works out better.
