But WHY do the Mets have to hedge their bets on the rookies? The Yankees were just fine starting Judge and Sanchez as rookies last year, granted neither Dom or Rosario is THAT but it's the principle of the thing. If the most well-run organization in baseball can start multiple rookies (and Judge was FAR from proven heading into the season) in the same market, why can't we?

In principle they should almost always be hedging their bets and making sure they have positions covered and add depth. Particularly if they are worried about a guy being able to do something as basic as keep himself in shape.

The problem is more the question of whether Gonzalez can be good anymore. But I don't take issue with the Mets not assuming every young player is going to be great

To be fair, the Yankees almost had Judge start in AAA and went with Hicks in the OF over him.

There's a difference between depth and blocking someone entirely. Guys like Flores and Brandon Nimmo are depth. You don't 'have' to play them but you can if you need to, and get functional output. You do have to play A-Gone, or at least the Mets are acting like they do. And you might not neccesarily get functional output from him.

That combination will make about $5m this year (Mets portion, anyway) and produced a combined -.2 fWAR in 614 PA (right about a full season's worth).

If the team is good this year, and I think it’s not unreasonable to hope (if not expect) it will be, having a couple good veterans isn’t a bad thing.

Mike Puma saying Dom to AAA, A-Gon to start the season at 1st. No real surprises.
