I'm not too worried about the system. Several guys could be top 100 by this time next year with reasonable progression this season.

Sure, more decent players locked in the purgatory of never getting an opportunity and never getting used to acquire anyone else.

Mets LHP prospect David Peterson, who the team selected with their first round pick (20th overall) in last June's MLB Draft, is No. 58 on Keith Law of ESPN's Top 100 Prospects list.

Calling Peterson "more of a command lefty than the power guy you might expect from his frame," Law wrote the following:

"Peterson's fastball comes in at 90-92 on average and touches 94 when he needs a little more, but the grade 55 slider is his out pitch, and he can throw both for strikes. He takes advantage of his height with huge extension toward the plate and has a little funk in the back of his delivery to give him some more deception."

Law, who added that Peterson will need to throw his changeup more in pro ball in order to stay ahead of right-handed hitters, said he should "sail through A-ball given his ability to throw two pitches where he wants them and the difficulty hitters have seeing the ball"

"He has a high floor as a back-end starter," Law concludes, "but there's a little Chris Sale/Alex Wood potential here if he adds velocity when he fills out."

Spoke to a prominent writer and he said the Mets system is "awful". Said 2016 and 2017 drafts were "unusually boring" with very little upside, strange obsession with the SEC despite not doing well in the region, views Vientos as the only realistic "meteoric rise" upside type for this upcoming season, not particularly enamored with Peterson (likes him but as a 4-5 horse vs. anyone exciting), said J2 guys aren't on "anyone's" radar if you aren't a Maitan type with massive pre-sign buzz

Oh yeah and they refuse to replace scouts who were hand selected by a member of the FO other than Sandy.

This is what puzzles me every year (bold).

By far the greatest failure of this regime has been its awful drafting.

"Most" of the scouts were suggested/selected/have a relationship with JP Ricciardi (who we actually never really hear from anymore).

Oh yeah and said Dunn has been heavily scouted (even in the FSL) and the scouts still have no idea what to make of him. He said the Mets are "hoping" he can bounce back like Dillon Tate (who himself is no longer a big prospect even with a solid season)

He also said the Mets take some very low upside "best case extra MLBer" types even when not making "money saving" picks and that a consensus around the league. That they "waste" more top 10 round picks than almost any other team.

This has been pointed out ad nauseum 'round these parts.

The lack of 1st round success sucks, but you still get 40 cracks at this thing. It appears we think you get 1 shot at a decent prospect and the rest of the draft should be to fill out the back fields at XST.

He said there were names that came off the board the last 2 seasons that were reasonably high picks that had 3's and 4's as their best realistic case. Like if you dreamed big they would be solid utility players and he said most weren't even great bets for that. He said other teams use their "small bonus money saver" picks on very similar guys.
