That's what happens you don't draft well, ignore international markets, graduate top prospects, and make trades during a pennant run.

They have traded almost 0 "top" prospects. Fulmer and a bunch of nobodies. Fulmer is great but the "pennant race trades" are a fan construct.

Not that many teams end up trading away a ROY while he's still in AA.

If we hadn't traded Fulmer we'd still be 27th because he would have graduated.

Yes, Fulmer was drafted under Chad McDonald in 2011, the last good draft the Mets have had (other than nabbing Conforto at #10 overall).

Yeah, we'll see if they don't screw up the #6 pick next June.

If they are struggling in July they're really going to have to consider a complete fire sale. Meaning deGrom and Syndergaard.

So we can get more "relief prospects"?

We had a fire sale last year. We traded 5 guys in July and August. The returns from that, I would hope, gets people out of "Tanking is such a great idea" mode.

Same problems with tanking and firesales as we see when we're "going for it" - talent recognition just isn't a strong suit. Showing the restraint and patience of a Buddhist monk, and offering "funny" quips/one-liners are where we excel.

Well to be fair selling a bunch of two-month rentals, half of whom aren't even signed to contracts yet this offseason is a little different than the total haul trading a Thor or deGrom would get. Not that I'm advocating for one, but you obviously aren't going to restock the farm system trading two months of Duda, Walker or a washed up Curtis. The Reed and Bruce returns were dissapointing though, although we know why they got nothing for Bruce, cause the market sucks for his 'type' and because the Mets insisted on no salary retention.

2015 was a good draft, especially considering no first round pick and only 3 million and change to spend.

2017, the jury is still out but I like the top 2 picks. There's so much randomness in an average draft, I don't think it's easy to measure drafting skill.

Well the Cubs are one, but they actually HAVE the excuse of having traded away most of their guys in win-now deals (and graduating a lot of studs before that).

I'm quite confident that they'll manage to screw it up.
