Did smoker clear waivers? If he didn't, this move makes some sense. If he did, then this move is a little more confusing.

? He's being mentioned because his spot should have gone to Smoker.

When you outright someone off the 40, those aren't revocable waivers ala trade waivers.

In this case, since he was dealt, its because they used the 7 day window in the 10 day DFA window to negotiate a trade prior to placing him on waivers.

He wouldn't have cleared, and they knew that. They tried to get Bradford and McGowan through, and Bradford got picked up (apparently 4 teams claimed him with Mariners having priority, so meaning 4 pretty good teams given where the Mariners stand in the waiver priority).

I knew some of that, more lazy posting on my part. If he wouldn't have cleared than this is a no-brainer move. They got something instead of nothing.

I had no idea Bradford was claimed by 4 teams. Wow.

At least this shows that they are capable of negotiating a deal with another team...

He did not, per DiComo.

Saw on a Pirates board that DiComo said Smoker was well liked in the clubhouse.

Pirates fans are mixed on this deal. They had an open roster spot from a suspension and they didn't expect a real signing, but thought they could have done better with waivers, maybe Susac (though I've looked at Susac's numbers and I don't see the attraction, even for a former top 100 prospect).

5.1 BB/9. Twenty nine years old. What more needs to be said?

This isn't like the time we waived O'Day to keep Nellie.
