The Mets have historically had pretty horrendous outfields. It's not something that's been isolated to the last decade.

Pretty spot on : https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx? ... &players=0

Believe of the teams in existence as of 1962 the Mets outfield has been worse than all but the Chicago teams plus the Senators/Rangers franchise.

So we've historically been more ineffective in the outfield than all but a few historically ineffective franchises.

There's nothing Sandy could have done to make up for the early 60s and mid/late 70s

but we've come a long way from these guys being our top four:

2012
Andres Torres
Scott Hairston
Lucas Duda
Kirk Nieuwenhuis

To be fair, there is something Sandy could have done to make up for that at the time:

.288/.338/.440/.778, 120 OPS+, 4.0 WAR

Oops.

Is his arm intact? :P

Seriously, hope Thompson is ok.

See a lot of Wheeler-to-the-pen talk. Thats fine, but it really shouldn't be with Montero.

Wheeler won't be more than a long guy/mop up man as it was explained last year, as he takes a while to warm up and they won't use him B2B or anything. So there's no need to continue carrying Montero.

I'm interested in Gsellman in a short relief role. He's basically a 2 pitch guy, and he got some extra oomph in his brief pen cameo last year. I'd do that with Wheeler as long guy and dump Montero.

Not to mention, Montero's options situation (being out of them) makes it more likely he passes through waivers if they're so afraid of losing him (and no idea why they are, but it seems like they are). What team is going to commit to carrying him all year? Why it makes no sense they dumped options guys like Bradford or Smoker over him, as they would obviously be carried and stashed in AAA.

Callaway on Wheeler: “He’s definitely a starting pitcher. For us to be the best possible team we can be, we have to have him be a starter and he’s going to go out there and do everything he can to win this competition we have going on.”
