According to Rich Eisen, an MLB exec recently shared with him that a rule was being discussed that would allow the manager of a trailing team to send any three players to the plate in the ninth inning, regardless of the team’s batting order. So, if Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez made the final outs of the eighth inning, Aaron Boone would have the option to send his three best hitters back to the plate for the first three at-bats in the ninth inning, if the Yankees were trailing.

“No other sport has the best players sitting on the bench in the final minutes of a game,” the MLB exec told Eisen. “Imagine LeBron [James], [Tom] Brady, [Cristiano Ronaldo] watching from the sidelines.”

I complain about the Mets quite a bit but this would be such a bad rule change I'd be done with the sport of baseball.

First of all, while I see how that would be EXCITING, it would really only be exciting for that one inning so how does that help the game get better?

Second, it's completely unfair. This seems more like an XFL type thing than what this league is.

It will never happen.

Allowing the DH in one league but not the other seems pretty bad of the things that have happened.

I don't think baseball's decision-makers actually like baseball.

I hope this rule was laughed out of the room. It’s a bad sign if this was a serious discussion. For all the bellyaching from the union about how pitch clocks fundamentally alter the game, this would alter it x100

You know what? I love it. In fact, I love it so much I'd make it a rule that any player can be subbed in and out of the game on offense and defense, as many times as you want to, and roster sizes are increased to 35 permanently.

And I'd also make it a rule that all fences must be moved in 150 feet. We want to be ultra fan friendly and ultra exciting. There can be NO WALL beyond 250 feet from Home Plate. Oh yes, and walks are boring, too. So from now on, if a pitcher issues a walk, he has to take a run of shame off the field and into a shark tank where he must survive for 60 seconds with a pair of killer sharks. Singles are boring, too. Any batter who hits a single must veer off the field prior to touching first base and enter an obstacle course filled with quicksand. If he doesn't make it back to first base inside of 30 seconds, he's out and disqualified from the remainder of the game.

Um, actually Tom Brady COULD be on the sideline the last minute of a game.

Tom,
So funny TONS of people are making that exact point on twitter. Really dumb/scary someone would use him/NFL as an example.

This would effectively ruin the progress that teams have made with relief pitchers.

Forget Miller pitching in a high leverage 7th inning. The 9th inning is going to be nuts!

Naw, because in Stupidworld, you'll also be able to bring in whatever pitcher you want to face them, even if they came out of the game earlier. This is like Cutthroat Kitchen: Diamond Edition.

Yeah I don't see the need to make all these drastic changes. Probably just something that was tossed out there but not seriously considered. It doesn't really make sense for there be some advantage to use only if you are losing. And it would seemingly hurt their (pointless) efforts to shorten the game.

Not that I like it this way either, but this might make more sense for extra inning games. There was some chatter about the idea of starting extra innings with a runner on 2nd...this might be an alternate to that. But I still don't see the need for any big changes like that.

If this rule was instituted MLB might as well just hand the trophy to the Yankees for the next 10 years.
