I think this is a great case of Spring Training results not mattering, but process should.

3 scoreless should be considered good, but seemed like he threw about equal balls and strikes. I believe I saw 1 swing and miss, and it was by some anonymous org player.

The slider looks like it could be scrapped at this point, or at least changed into a get me over pitch rather than his K pitch. The velo was OK - 91-94 - with a lot of trouble commanding it.

The narratives will be a lot different than what Matz is facing, but I'm not super encouraged by this just because he got 0's on March 5th doing it this way.

Somewhat agree. But his failure to command was really in the same place -- trying to go outside corner on RHB. So I think it's more likely that's a specific issue with that one location (hopefully) I was encouraged by the run away all his pitches were getting against LHB and his CU and CB looked good in the third.

Know he had at least three swings/misses -- against Krizan, Amarista, Iglesias.

Also, to be fair, should have had Miguel Cabrera rung up in T1. That pitch wasn't even close.

Familia not topping 94....

Lots of offspeed stuff. Splitters and sliders galore.

Think it was 27-21 Strikes: Balls.

Twitter confirmed 27/21 (better than I thought) and 2 whiffs (I must've missed one). Still...mehhhh.

Just doesn't look any different from that guy who fooled absolutely nobody last year. Guys used to wave at the slider, and be late on the fastball. Doesn't happen anymore. He's pitching to contact and we just don't have any evidence he can be effective doing that over the long term.

Nice splitter from Familia to get ahead 1-2.

Got out of it on a fat splitter (I think) that was grounded into the shift.

Another iffy outing from one of the "big 4" but if anything, we can say Familia is committed to bringing back the splitter. Velo is still down though, and command is, well, Familia-esque.

I think we can all agree the old Harvey is gone. Have to hope he can become an average to above average starter with his diminished stuff. Similar to Sabathia, or Mets-years Pedro.

There were very different versions of this.

Pedro through 2006 still got whiffs like whoa and was excellent.

2008 Pedro pitched to contact and was pretty awful.

Have they scored 10 runs this spring combined??

They have been incredibly boring thus far. I am not joking. I dont have a good feeling about what this lineup is going to do.

I wouldn't worry about the lineup, yet, which hasn't played a single full game together (or close to it).

Well they have 11 home runs, so I'll take the over on the 10 runs thing. They have played their regulars exceedingly sparingly so the offense has been a bit dry this spring. Heck, Patrick Biondi has gotten into 11 of 12 games so far (only didn't play in the second split squad game).

Nimmo, Flores and d'Arnaud all have XBHs today. So that's good at least.

Spring training in general is a terrible forecast for how the season will go (I read that in an article once, I'm not just saying it). Still, roster decisions are made, and I don't think Matz (or Gonzalez) should be guaranteed anything. Harvey's a bit tougher as he could opt-out of being optioned. Better to give him a few starts and see how he looks.
