What are the chances he gets called up before September?

I keep wondering if he gets a taste of the bigs if Ces goes on the DL - provided they think it's short term.

Smith got his chance and failed and can't even break 800 OPS in Vegas now. If he hasn't been passed by Alonso in the Mets' brass eyes', well it's worse than I thought.

Smith failed? I don't even think he got 200 AB's in the MLB...Wow.

My thoughts on him getting a chance in the event of a Cespedes DL stint was thinking more about his right-handedness. Lotta lefties out there now. Of course, he can't play the OF.

Alonso is way ahead of Dom at this point. It's not close.

I would take the counterpoint. It's not as close as Alfonso fans think.

Considering Alonso has out-performed Conforto, Rhys Hoskins, and Paul Goldschmidt in the minors and has a 226 wRC+ in AA, I don't think age relative to league and defense make up for Dom what's a grand canyon difference in bat.

I think it's close to automatic.

Dom's already used an option this year, his 1st of 3, so the mets can call him up and send him down as they like.

Pros:

Alonso looks like a potential impact bat, something the mets could really use, especially if they manage to stay in the playoff hunt.

If the Mets are considering going with Alonso at 1st next year, it makes ll kinds of sense to get a look at him in the majors this year.

Gonzalez isn't very good and there's not much evidence that Dom is good right now.

Cons

It starts his clock early and adds a man to the 40 this winter (Alonso has a minor league year remaining if they chose not to add him).

If Alonso hits like a stud, it could hurt their tank (but might bring more fans to the stadium . . . a bit plus to the Coupons, I mean, Wilpons.

Even if his bat is ready, his glove might not be, but I think that's a small point. May as well take a look and see how ready he is.

Bottom line, I think the pros outweigh the cons and I think we'll see him after super-two.

People do like their shiny new objects. Guys who don't play are always better than the guys who do.

Smith is a bust. Rosario is a bust. And if Alfonso ever struggles we can start the Jeremy Vasquez hype.
