No need to make any long term decisions between the two, though. Smith won't be out of options until 2021. And these are two guys who could platoon at some point, if needed, as well.

Alonso has the higher ceiling.

Smith is the guy you turn to if you need somebody in 2018.

When teams carried only 10 pitchers, sure.

But with teams carrying 12 or 13 P's it's incredibly hard to see two 1B-only guys on a roster.

I think a 1B split can work if one of them can fill in at 3rd or corner OF. I don't think that's the case here.

The other problem is that the split favors the lefty and that makes Alonso a bench player (We already have Wilmer to be righty bench 1B). It doesn't really work.

Dom appears to be a big splits guy though and Dom/Wilmer might work at 1st. Alonso appears to be the better prospect, which kind of puts an end to the split idea, but I do kind of like the idea of Dom off the bench. He'd might make a hek of a pinch hitter and a possible defensive replacement for Alonso at times.

Dom is a right fielder, now. Problem solved!

Until they make McNeil a RF too

You have to admire this organization's commitment to not change their ways.

-Anybody can play corner OF.
-Slow and steady wins the race.
-TdA is going to turn it around soon.
-Bullpens are fungible.

If you're commuted to doing something idiotic you'd try Alonso in the outfield, because the need is for a righthanded bat.

Cubs move their guys around all the time, I don't see an issue of Dom playing RF to improve possible versatility for himself and the team.

The problem is that he most likely doesn't possess the minimum athleticism needed to pull it off. But it doesn't hurt to give it a shot. And I wouldn't point to the Cubs playing of Schwarber in LF as something to emulate.

Tony DeFrancesco on Dominic Smith's first couple games in the outfield: "He looks pretty athletic. He's moving around. He made a couple nice plays today. Two throws to home plate. With the situation in New York, it just may be another option down the road if he can handle that."

Dominic Smith will be in the outfield 2-3x per week, DeFrancesco said. He played right field a couple nights ago, left field tonight.

This is fantastic news. Indicates that indeed Alonso may have passed him and (wishful thinking?) they may be looking to move on from Bruce.

The situation in New York is that we have 30 left-handed hitting outfielders, and no right-handed hitting outfielders.

This does absolutely nothing for the present nor for the future.

It effectively improves Dom's market value.
