When I floated this theory past Keith — that baseball is filled with booths where the guys just sound on autopilot — he didn’t wait for me to finish.

“Oh, yeah,” he said. “Cross town.”

He called it -they suck

but no crew could be as bad as the crew that did that Jet/Lion opening MNF game -
Beth Mowins on play-by-play and Brian Griese as the color analyst

Will be a sad day when Gary, Keith and Ron have their last game together. Selfishly, I hope it's not for another decade. These guys are a joy to listen to even when the team stinks and I'm not sure the average or casual Mets fan realizes just how much better GKR is compared to most announcing crews and how lucky we all are to have them as "our guys".

Yeah even if they're a little bit crusty and old school, they have personality, chemistry, and are a good fit for NY. Of course, Gary makes it go. He's gold.

I'll take "crusty and old school" over whatever passes for "fresh and new school". I've been exposed to tons of other broadcasts the last couple years via MLB.tv (where you can choose which feed to watch/listen, which is quite a nice feature I might add) and the majority are worthy of the mute button. Like you said, it takes individuals with a personality as well as the ability to work well with the other broadcasters, on top of actually being good at calling a game. Sadly, it seems most others don't have that ability. Either they lack charisma, aren't any good at calling a game, or the "pro" broadcaster has absolutely no chemistry with the former ballplayer they've stuck him in the booth with.

We've been spoiled with this group.

My only complaint is they eschew SABR/advanced stats to the point of obnoxiousness.

I find this talk about Kelenic comical. He's a 19 year old kid who hit .253 at Kingsport
and struck out once a game and people are talking like he's the second coming. Get real people. When you have a chance to get the best reliever in the game who's only 24 and give up Kelenic in the deal, you MAKE that deal. Stop with the nonsense.

As much as they're great, I think this is perhaps the one area where ownership deserves credit. It's been said that they actively avoid having homers in the booth, and really want a more intellectual crew that reflects the fan base. I'm confident that their replacements will also be good when they eventually move on. Ownership understands that Mets fans won't tolerate anything else.

What do you mean tolerate? Would they tolerate a bad booth less than they do perpetual losing? For the record, I would take a lousy booth for a perpetual winner. I loathe the Yankee booth (radio of course), but would take that in a heartbeat for a perennial winner.

The Mets don't have a normal fanbase. It's a lot more cynical. Pure homerism won't play as well as it will in most other markets. I'm looking at the booth as a separate thing from the product on the field.
