You're in favor of Cervelli, right?

Why trade for him when CATCHERS Drew Butera and Caleb Joseph are available for just money?

There are no Edwin Diaz's available for just money. Quite frankly, other than this special set of circumstances, Edwin Diaz's don't come available for trade all that often (if ever), either.

So Kimbrel is the Drew Butera of closers?

I think you just might be overstating the case on this one.

That's only 8 short of meaningful games.

Kimbrel costs a draft pick, so not really a great comp there if we're on the "only money" kick.

The difference between Cervelli and Butera is probably about the same as Diaz and Britton though.

Anyway, of course its hyperbole, but the point is that saying two guys fill the same spot doesn't make them equivalent choices. There were older, less effective, and more costly (in $) options available in FA. So lets say we get the closes to Diaz and sign Kimbrel, forfeit a pick, and sign him to a 5/85 deal.

What else are we getting this offseason? Yes, we have Jared Kelenic still. Of course we have Bruce and Swarzak too. I challenge you to posit a realistic offseason post that Kimbrel signing.

Sure, Diaz didn't pitch in any meaningful games.... how could Seattle ever play any meaningful games anyway all the way up there??

The 42nd.

Not the 6th and the 19th.

It's not his fault he's never thrown a high-pressure pitch. But until he does let's not assume he can.

We don't really have to go into the dynamics of the 40 round MLB draft here, do we?

Or how the 64th pick of the 2016 draft is going to be competing, and winning, the battle for 1B over the 11th pick of the 2013 draft this spring, right?

If you're going to be complaining about trading prospects for a reliever, you can't then be in favor of giving up a comp pick for an older and more expensive one. Thats intellectually dishonest.

Hate it. More I think about it, the worse I feel. Trade good prospects for a one inning pitcher and an old player with a huge contract.

It makes the Mets better for next year, but that’s not exactly hard to do. Shouldn’t get much credit for making a 77 win team an 80 win team.

There are no Edwin Diaz's available for just money. Quite frankly, other than this special set of circumstances, Edwin Diaz's don't come available for trade all that often (if ever), either.

OK... so going over the top with the point-making... Diaz had a great year. As long as there's no dropoff, everyone will be happy. Point remains that there were other [less elite] closers available (Soria, Familia, Kimbrel, Herrera, Kelly, Ottavino, Robertson) that could have filled the role w/o using up any prospect capital.

I'm not denouncing the deal, but there is an argument to make for the other side. Thing is that every one of those RPers above is going to require an 8 figure annual salary for multiple years. In this case, the Mets pretty much get a 2 for 1 by making that 8 figure outlay, they're getting Cano thrown in also. Plus Diaz is almost certainly as good or better than all of the above available closers and will continue to be reasonably priced for a few more years.

So, yes it cost 2 of the team's top 5 prospects. I get the sting a little bit. But as I said a few pages back, you have to give to get. And after 8 yrs of clutching every prospect for dear life, it feels good that we're loosening up a little bit... taking a different approach... bc the last one did not work.
