Well, we were warned it would be an interesting low-level guy, and Catalina fits the bill. He’s 18 and hasn’t pitched in a pro game yet, but earned a six-figure bonus, routinely hits mid-90s, and was going to skip the DSL and start his career stateside.

That's pretty unusual.

If Font keeps outpitching the other options, I'm fine with giving up a borderline interesting DSL guy.

This front office just does not care about the farm apparently at this point.

Why, because they gave up an 18 yo who hasn’t thrown a professional pitch yet?

I think on a roster where you have 20 RHPers who are 6'0 and 1 who is 6'6, he's the one you try to hold onto.

+1...may be a nothing prospect but 6'6" 18 yr olds that throw mid 90's...if true...you tend to want to hold on to for more than Font...Seems like the perfect deal to send 75k and Mitch Ghelfi in

You know who else is 6'6" and throws mid-90's? Wilmer Font. And you're losing 1 year of control here but fast forwarding a long time in development.

This would be a bad deal if you traded this lotto ticket for like Adeinny Hechevarria. But Wilmer Font is sort of the outcome you'd hope for from an older DSL sign who has physicality and velocity and a lot of other unknowns.

Well that and the other trades they've made. These are the types of lottery tickets you keep.

He's a guy Tampa left out on the curb hoping some kind passerby would haul away.

He's a guy Tampa and Oakland gave up A ball arms with big K numbers for last year when he was DFA'ed and had ERAs in the double digits. So again, lets not only cite this whole "THis is what smart orgs do!!!" thing one way. 2 smart orgs gave up similar dart-throw arms for this guy last year despite no record of success at that point.

You know what happens when you keep a lot of lottery tickets? You throw away a lot of losing tickets.

If we had Tampa's depth, we wouldn't have been in the Font market to begin with. We could get 80 meaningful IP out of Font this year. But an 18 yo who hasn't pitched yet could be something in 2024!
