Wilson and Avilan have been huge since they both got healthy. These are two lefties in their primes with 3.3 career FIPs. Nobody said a peep when Wilson went down but it was an enormous loss. And Callaway had no idea what he was doing using Avilan as a long man/mop up guy early in the season.

You have the two lefties, Lugo, possibly Familia, Brach as a righty specialist. It's not great, but it might be better than what the competition is throwing out there. Factor in the 5 starters pitching deep into games meaning you aren't asking for a ton of outs every night and this bullpen just might be good enough to get the job done.

Could be worse, much worse. The Nats bullpen will be killer in the playoffs assuming they advance past the WC game unless Scherzer, Straburg, and Corbin throw CGs each night.

Martinez has to go all Billy Martin on that rotation. Starters are going 9 if they have to throw 237 pitches....

Avilan still is not being used right. He's being asked to mop up 1 inning instead of 2 inning appearances, but he's faced over twice as many RHB as LHB this year, despite the crazy splits:

vs. LHB: .067/.152/.100 against with a 10/3 K/BB ratio
vs. RHB: .383/.464/.533 against with a 11/6 (+3 HBP) K/BB ratio

He is a strict LOOGy, and a really good one. Mickey continues to use him as a 1 inning low leverage guy. This is not maximizing him.

Agreed on Avilan. And I did make a peep when Wilson was hurt. Noted he was a big loss. No bridge to a (then passable) Diaz when Lugo couldn't throw.

I was a big advocate of signing Wilson...he has really pitched well since coming off the IL.
