He would make a good mid-major coach. He's able to snag a few players that should go to better programs, but in the Big 11 that only good for .500 most of the time.
If he can snag those same players at a lesser conference he'll rack up 20-25 win years.
Not surprised. Michigan was never reallly able to get over the hump the last few years. Nice guy, amaker, but a change is needed at ann arbor.
It's kind of ironic, with the rivalry between Michigan and Michigan state. In football, Michigan State is the poor sister; while in basketball, it's Michigan that's had some lean years of late.
it is odd since Michigan has been in two or three final fours in the relatively recent past.
Was it 88 that they were in the title game with Glen Rice? And then the Fab Five years. They've fallen from being a perenial sweet 16, to an NIT regular.
And most of it has to do with State getting the homegrown, and better out of state players.

You beat me to that thought.
It's pretty consistent in recent history that Michigan has been the football superpower and Michigan State has been significantly better in hoops (except for the Fab Five era, or course. And that one had a lot of scandal before it was over).
Why do you suppose it is?

Who would take that job? I mean it's been proven you can win there, but the conference is tough, not to mention still on the rise. Would any coach currently with a big-time program leave their current position to be the Head Coach for Michigan basketball is my main question? Are there any rumors of who's interested?

There really arent many dominant programs in the Big 11, Indiana could become one under Sampson, and Mich St. is one. Wisc is on a short run, Illinios had a run before their coach left for Kansas, and the rest are take em or leave em. Michigan could become a dominant program, not just a decent one.
Should have never left Seton Hall, I understand why he did but IMO the sanctions against Michigan early in his tenure hurt his buzz on the recruiting trail and was not able to land the big fish.
IMO the best way to build a winner in college hoops is with a stable coach. almost all of the consistently good teams have coaches that have been there awhile and have AD's that stick with them for the ups and downs.

Michigan wants John Beilein. Not flashy, but a great coach who has won everywhere he's been.
