Post subject:  Moderators being excessive

There is a thread in the General Off Topic called "Things Met Fans Like to Talk About." Someone deleted posts that a) were not offensive and b) were completely on topic. I think this is an extremely poor decision.

K4 posting that Met fans like to talk about "hot chicks" is obviously true-- see the thread whenever it was about "hot girls" and about "hot guys." It was mostly tongue in cheek, anyway. I made a joke in response to his joke about Static's obsession with Elisha Cuthbert. I see nothing wrong with this, and I think some mod took it the wrong way/was being abusive of their power. Whatever the case, there is absolutely no reason K4's post should have been deleted and mine probably not.

There is a friggin condom thread, yet we can say Met fans like to talk about hot chicks?

Makes absolutely no sense.

PS If I need to PM this instead, let me know. But I think this is a topic worthy of discussion in this forum.

While I did not delete the thread/posts you're talking about, you need to realize that NYFS remains, above all, a family site. "Off Topic" doesn't mean anything. It just means things that do not fit into the other categories. Sometimes things get out of control, and sometimes we like to "head them off at the pass" before it gets out of control.

I've said on a number of occasions that I fully understand why people believe that NYFS is not the ideal moderation system. It doesn't make any one person happy all the time. But, from our experience, we've found that our methods have led to the best overall happiness for everyone.

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me with more questions/comments/etc.

I didn't see either the condom thread or the posts champstark is talking about, but what I often get confused about is where the line is. I've seen posters make jokes full of innuendo and I'm surprised that they're not edited and then I see things that get deleted and I can't figure out why they were. I get that each moderator has different standards, but it's difficult to figure out whether or not I should even post certain things.

We've talked about that a lot -- how we all tend to delete/edit different kind of stuff and how it makes it difficult for users to a) understand what's appropriate and b) unedrstand what we're trying to do. All I can say in "defense" of the staff is that we do our best, and don't intentionally try to fry one person or another, or give mass leeway to other characters. But, we're human, and we don't have all the time in the world.

Most of the staff is either in college, post-grad work, or working insane jobs. It's amazing we find 20 hours per day to be on NYFS :)

Fair enough. Trust me, I get that you guys try your best and I don't envy you for having to read 17 different Heilman or Milledge threads.

I have an obsession with Elisha Cuthbert? :o :!:

I knew when I saw the condom thread that it was going to be deleted. I remember when OT was on a "What's your favorite..." binge that someone posted the same topic and it was subsequently deleted. I don't know what the line is but it seems that anything sexual that is not either a joke in good taste or educational is deleted in order to avoid offending anyone.

A similar situation arose when Ed cracked down on avatars. Personally, I have no problem with this type of moderation since the main point of this site is to promote respect towards every user, every player, and everybody. "Hot chicks," even in jest, is derogatory, and NYFS is very clear on not allowing viewing women as objects. It's a PG site.

There's plenty of pictures of Elisha in a bikini. While I do not doubt that there is a group of users that would not mind seeing that every time I post, I do recognize that there are people that don't want to see it, and because of this, I choose pictures that better represent her beauty.

The same holds true in the style of posting. Tongue in cheek comments may be funny for some, but others may take it the wrong way. IDK, perhaps I'm just used to the guidelines that I don't see the problem. Some things are just better left unsaid.
