Just like people who don't understand why Blood on the Tracks is awesome or who don't like sam cooke's voice -- i'll never get people who don't love Pedro Martinez.
Although there's nothing held against you if you choose to go with the straightforward "Team A selects Marv Throneberry", it's always cool to spruce up your selection.
Feel free to add pictures, well- or little-known facts, records held, whatever. The prettier the setup, the more impressive the pick!

I was going to write some more (and I will tomorrow), but I'm not home, but my sidekick told me I got an email which told me I got a pm.
So, honus wagner, ss. If you look at how much better he is than all other ss, you could make a compelling (though I think losing) argument that he's better than ruth.
With the third overall pick, a2d's Argonauts select OF Ted Williams.

For 22 seasons in baseball Mays had a 162 game average of 36 HR, 103 RBI, and a .302 BA. Mays was a 12 time Gold Glove winner, 20 time All-Star, 1951 Rookie of the year, 1954 Player of the year (after returning from the Korean War), two time All-Star MVP, 1971 Roberto Clemete Award winner, and two time NL-MVP. While he only won one World Series he apeared in four. He led the Majors from 1956-1959 in stolen bases. He was also in the top five in all of baseball every season he played in extra base hits.

I'm going to go with probably the most underrated player of all-time. This man wasn't selected by the fans to MLB's all centruy team in 2000, and had to be put in by a special committe.
