I'm in a Yahoo! 12-team league. Due to circumstances beyond my control I wound up missing all but my first pick (Santana ironically). Anything I can do to at least finish in the top three or something? I don't think my team's particularly good except at closer and maybe outfield.

C - Pierzynski
1B - Swisher, Sexson
2B - Weeks, Matsui
SS - Young
3B - Encarnacion, Blalock
OF - Sizemore, Dunn, Rios, Bay (Swisher's also eligible)
SP - Santana, Weaver, Escobar, Hughes
RP - Papelbon, Nathan, Capps
+ two open slots (were Cudduyer and Andrew Miller), probably will be three when I put Escobar or Matsui on the DL so I can claim some sleepers.

It's a standard 5*5 roto league with one starter at every position (3 OF), a utility player, two SP, two RP and three P slots.

Ok, let's start out at catcher. I'm not a fan of Pierzynski, I think I'd much rather take a gamble on a rookie like Geovany Soto (Cubs) or J.R. Towles (Astros). If neither of them are available, I'd try and see if I could snag Mike Napoli off the waiver/free agent wire. His average may not be great, but he'll at least give you 20+ homers, and should get some decent RBI opps, at least for a catcher.

At first, start Swisher. It's not even a question. He's moving from a wasteland of a stadium to a sandbox, which should rekindle his power numbers. Again, he won't give you a great average (probably between .270 and .280) but 35 homers and close to 100 RBI's is good enough. You could go ahead and drop Sexson, you don't need his .203 batting average.

As for second base, Matsui should get you some steals, Weeks some power. Again, I don't think either of them are all that great for batting average, but Weeks may not even give you .250.

At third, I think Encarnacion may develop into a solid fantasy option, but I don't think he's quite there yet. To me, he seems like a really streaky hitter, and has more doubles power than home runs. Maybe he'll develop this year, but I'm not convinced.

Your 4 outfielders are all good, and whichever one you don't have in your outfield, start as your utility. Sizemore should contribute across the board, as should Rios. Bay and Dunn should provide you with good power, but just remember Dunn's average isn't anything to be thrilled about.

As for your pitching, you can't go wring with Santana anchoring your staff, but the rest of them leave something to be desired. I'm not sold on any of them, except for maybe Hughes, but since he's a rookie and will be limited to about 150-160 innings, he won't give you a full season. You may want to see if there's a Shaun Marcum, Matt Garza or Kevin Slowey on the FA wire, they should get you decent stats for back-end of the rotation starters.

Thanks for the detailed answer.

I don't think I'm going to keep Pierzynski, there are some interesting options on the wire - Napoli, Towles and Carlos Ruiz, not sure which one I'll go with yet.

I have the fourth waiver claim but not sure if there's anyone I really want to use it on. I like Chris Duncan and would probably drop Sexson for him if I picked him up but he's almost redundant since he's also eligible for 1B/OF.

The first two pitchers you named were drafted, I'll consider Slowey. Franklin Morales is also on the wire. Otherwise I might have to rely on hold-the-fort guys like Mussina, Randy Johnson, Maddux or Silva (all on the wire) if I can't find enough younger guys I like. I think with my team I will be more apt to roll the dice with younger players.

Bumping this up since I made a lot of changes:

C - Ruiz
1B - Swisher
2B - Weeks
SS - Young
3B - Blalock
OF - Sizemore, Dunn, Rios
Util - Bay
Bench - Duncan
Bench - Cabrera (Cle)
Bench - Encarnacion
DL - Matsui

SP - Santana
SP - Weaver (LAA)
RP - Papelbon
RP - Nathan
P - Hughes
P - Capps
P - Morales (Col)
Bench - Villenueva (Mil)

Hopefully I'll be able to trade one of my back-end OF's for a decent SP since I do have six players capable of playing the OF including Swisher. I still have one open spot, Rafael Soriano got dropped so I put in a claim for him (I have the #3 waiver position)

Carlos Ruiz will probably get you somewhere around .265, 10-15 homers, but with the rest of the lineup they've got there, he might crack 70 RBI's, which isn't bad for a catcher. At least you didn't overpay for a Posada/Veritek kind of guy, once the top catchers go, everyone seems to go into a frenzy for the rest of those guys.

I'll be 100% honest, I don't know what to expect from Hank Blalock. It wasn't too long ago he was putting up All-Star numbers, and now he's not being drafted in more than 20% of leagues. ESPN has him projected at .273, 20 HR, 77 R, 87 RBI's, and he's got a little better upside than that. I could see 25-28 homers and 95 RBI's or so coming from him, but that's if he can keep it together all year.

With Duncan, I assume you meant the guy from St Louis, not the backup 1B for the Yankees.

As for starting pitchers, I don't want to give away all my sleepers, but if they're available, a Claudio Vargas (FA, may sign with the Mets last I heard), Wandy Rodriguez (Hou) Jair Jurjjens (Atl) or Hiroki Kuroda (LAD, if he's avialable) type might be worth looking into. There are a lot of pitching prospects who should get midseason call-ups, and a lot of guys like Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder and Matt Clement are worth at least keeping an eye on them once they get off the DL. And if you really want a anme out of the blue, maybe Radhames Liz from Baltimore. I dunno if he's available, and there were talks he might be optioned back to AAA (I don't know if they ever did yet,) but guys like that could be worth a look at.

Yup I was referring to Chris Duncan, see a couple posts above :) I got Ruiz, Duncan, Cabrera, Morales and Villenueva all as FA's after my hideous autodraft.

I was gonna pick up Carlos Silva but I read he's had a terrible spring and they've changed some mechanics on him so I went with younger pitchers to start with.

You can't go wrong with young pitchers, but you have to expect some growing pains. As good as a young kid might be, he won't have his best stuff the whole season, he'll go through periods of struggle.

Nevermind, decided to keep the roster as is (after a couple of other changes) for now. Wish I had more than a handful of bench spots, I could easily fill a 25-man roster with useful players and prospects.
