Hey all,

I've been browsing the forum every once in a while, but I haven't logged in for a while. I just had a quick question about the best way to set up an in-person draft.

I have a couple leagues on ESPN, including one keeper league with most of my buddies from my hometown and college which we just started up last year. We did an online draft last year, but since we're all from around the same area, I want to get us all together to have the draft in person. I'm trying to figure out the best way to do the draft, and I'm running into a few problems. First, a little background on the league:

Like I said, it's a keeper league on ESPN. H2H (I would've preferred roto I think, but everyone else voted for H2H, so that's what we ended up with), 10 teams, standard 5x5 scoring, 21 roster spots, 5 keepers per year (I wanted more, and now I have 8 or 9 guys I'd like to keep, I have to figure out which way I'm going to go, but that's a question for a different thread.) Like I said, we did an online draft last year, but this year I'm trying to get everyone together to do it in person, and I just had a few questions:

1. Draft order and time per pick: We did a random order for the draft last year, normal snake draft. We'll be doing another snake draft this year, but instead of having a random order, we'll be doing the draft in the reverse order of the standings (boo having the last pick in the first round). Sound fair? Besides that, how much time would you recommend giving each player for a pick? Online, we had 90 seconds, but live, I think we might need a little more time, but I'm not sure how much. And if a player runs out of time and doesn't make a pick in time, what's standard protocol? Skip their pick until the end of the round? End of the draft? Give them some sort of a time bank they can use?

2. How to keep track of who's been drafted? Like I said, we have 10 teams, is it easiest to get a couple dry erase boards and stands and just write each pick as the person makes it?

3. What if something comes up and someone can't make it, but it's too late to change the date? Do I just ask for their pre-rankings, and draft for them based on what player they have ranked highest, and what position they have available? Like, we fill every position on their starting roster, and then fill out their bench spots with the highest-rated player on their list?

I think I had a couple more questions, but I can't think of them right now, so I'll post them if I remember them. But in the meantime, I'm all ears, and thanks for the advice.

Obviously I'm a month behind, so perhaps this is totally irrelevant to you now, but I only just took a gander at the fantasy forum.

1) In the league I commish with a live draft, all of the members are friends. We typically set an informal time of two minutes per pick, but let it slide if people are slow. If they get too slow, peer pressure is applied

If it is not a league of people that close, then I think setting a somewhat more generous time limit would be a good idea (3 minutes?) and if someone misses a pick, they can pick at any time before someone else picks. I'd treat it like the NFL draft with missed picks.

2) Dry erase board works, but is a burden on whoever is keeping the board (since they presumably also have to keep an official record, but also to keep their own draft in order). Another option is hook a computer up to a TV and display it on there.

3) If someone can't make, we always try first to get them on the phone for the draft (once, a member who was abroad in Australia spent 4 hours on the phone during a draft. I'm not kidding. We didn't even pay dues at that point!) If that doesn't work, then we use pre-rankings - hopefully ones they send, and if not, our "canonical source" which is the CBS Sportsline rankings because they are our host. When doing that option, the rule is "pick the highest ranked player in a position not yet filled" and then "pick the highest player" once the starting roster spots are filled in.
