Crawford has been hanging around that long sometimes...

If you haven't picked yet, I always go BPA in the first couple rounds. Keep in mind, first is a good place to get power, but it's pretty thin this year, same with second -- there's a big dropoff after that Utley/Cano/Roberts trio. Third is incredibly deep this year, you can still get a good third-baseman in the tenth or eleventh round.

I don't like wasting big picks on a pitcher, but it's not terrible if you've got Santana or Carpenter hanging around. Speed goes fast, though, and there's only a handful of guys this year good for 40+ SB's.

I'd go speed with the first pick -- if Crawford's there, take him. You can always get HRs/AVG later.

I think you have to have a philosphy and draft to it.

if I'm drafting late, I'll see how the rest of the league picks, try and gauge if they are offensively or pitching focused, I should know for sure by the 5th/6th picks and be able to pick opposite of league trend and get good values that way. (e.g., if 8 of the first 10 guys pick power offensive players, grab two pitchers or two stolen base guys, or vice versa). Most fantasy drafters focus on either power offense or pitching first, so try and leverage the league trend to gain an advantage and snag pieces you can trade for later by getting "all" the top guys at something.

I've twice had great drafts that looked crappy on draft day until the morning after when everyone realized I had all the closers and all the stolen base guys, so I had great trade material.

I try and have an idea in my head where the line is between the 25-50 "premium" offensive guys and the 25-50 premium pitchers that the "rest of the pack", so I know when I have to grab my premium guy or start picking through the remains.

I tend to muscle up on the offense with multiskill players, and worry about pitching later. I try and snag two top closers and a strikeout/WHIP monster of a starter fairly early, but then, IMO, you can find guys who will bag 12-15 wins with a 3-4.00 ERA and 150 Ks or snag 12-15 saves to fill out your rotation and jockey some guys having hot streaks to cobble together quantity pitching stats.

It depends on the league, the level of the competiition and how the draft goes. Try and corner a market, speed is usually a forgotten warrior, but plates SBs and Runs, and XBH , depending how your league scores.

Not sure I buy that philosphy. Only Pitcher that would go in 1st rd is Johan, especially in 1st 5/6 picks as you mentioned. So how can you pick up on a trend that early.

What I do if I know my pick position enough in advance is run a few mock drafts w/ that spot to get a feel for players that will be there than I will come up w/ 3-4 players I plan to look at for each pick I will have and be prepared for a few players to fall and a few not to fall. In a 10-12 team league you will have a chance to get an ace still w/ 3rd pick.

Example in my NYFS league (Wright) I had 10th pick of 10. My plan was to take Wright and Berkman and 2 SP's w/ 3/4. Ortiz actually fell to me so i took Wright and Ortiz and than Oswalt and Peavy.
