Kanin,I understood what you were saying. All I'm saying is, if I was director of amateur scouting, I'd pass on Fields regardless of round.

I wouldn't waste a 4th round pick on Josh Fields. He stinks. Based on what exactly do you have him as the best college reliever?

You know someone will use a 2nd or 3rd round pick on him, just hope it's not the Mets.

While not drafting specifically for needs, I'd like to see it go something like this:

42nd - High school middle infielder.
47th - LHP
79th - High school pitcher
95th - Offensive catcher
101st - College pitcher

College pitcher, college pitcher, college pitcher, high school pitcher, high school pitcher

No way I would ever draft a purely offensive catcher. Ever.

That might not have been clear.

I don't mean a DH who squats.

He can have defensive skills.

But he needs to have some bat, unlike the endless parade of catch-and-throw guys we seem to spend a Top 5 pick on every year.

Think Petey Paramore over Drew Butera.

Nitey, I wouldn't waste a top 100 pick for that, especially with the Mets money (for FA catchers). Rather, try to pick out one who might have slipped by the scouting community a bit because his bat, though projectable, has only been solid; not great. Danny Lehmann of Rice is one of the best defensive catchers in college baseball (including calling the pitches, which is unusual in college) and though his AVG is only around .285 - .290, his OBP is well over .400. Outstanding plate discipline and the best situational hitter on the team. He's projected to go somewhere between the 4th and 6th rounds.

See, that's the exact profile the Mets seem to love and I'm trying to avoid.

You just described Hietpas, Kay, Hathaway Butera, et al....

Not quite, Nitey. Lehmann simply does not strikeout out. He has LoDuca's plate discipline and situational hitting skill, but with more raw power. All the guys you mentioned above were lousy, sub-par hitters in all aspects of hitting. Lehmann has upside in his offensive game (he's improved each of his 3 years in college)...and he's caught (and called the pitches for) the best college pitching staff in college ball over the last 3 years.

And he'll never get out of the Sally League.
