Started as a closer, moved into the rotation, looks like.

Took a tough-luck ND here: Jacob deGrom also got a no-decision after allowing only one run on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in 9.2 innings of work.

Here's the one scouting blurb I can find:

JACOB DEGROM: RHP; Stetson; 4th-10th rounds; scouts who've seen him the most like him the most. 89-92 mph fastball

It should be noted that he pitched 1 inning as a sophomore and 0 innings as a freshman. He was an infielder for them both years.

Certainly puts it in a different light.

Not sure I understand the modus operandi in this draft. The best pitching arms out of college were available early and the Mets passed (4th and 5th rounds), and a few of their early guys would likely still be on the boards now.

website lists him as "deGrom" if you want to nitpick...which I apparently am.

+1

And he still had the best ERA on his team.

Yeah I agree here.

Wanted arms, but would've rather had them earlier.

Hopefully a few of these guys pan out, but most of them seem like the standard 6'3" sinker/slider guy we've come to expect around this time.

DELAND -- DeLand Suns pitcher Jacob deGrom was in familiar territory Friday night -- on the mound at Melching Field at Conrad Park.

But the lanky right-hander from Stetson who is projected to be selected within the first 10 rounds in next week's Major League Baseball first-year player draft experienced something completely different: The satisfaction a hurler gets from breaking a hitter's wooden bat.

"I feel more confidence going inside on batters, that's for sure," deGrom said. "With aluminum, they get some hits that they wouldn't get with wood."

DeGrom actually broke three bats, more than enough for a small campfire in his DeLeon Springs back yard, while pitching in the Florida Collegiate Summer League season opener between the Suns and Orlando Mavericks. DeGrom struck out four, scattered three singles, didn't walk a batter and left after five innings with a 3-2 lead. Both of Orlando's runs were unearned.

The Mavericks added two runs in the eighth inning and won 4-3.

Not only was deGrom snapping wood, but his fastball was hitting between 92 and 94 mph on one scout's radar gun in the first two innings. His last outing before the draft certainly showed he's ready for the next level, especially pitching against hitters swinging wood bats.

DeGrom may not be in a Suns uniform very long.

"We'll have to play it by ear, but if this is his only start for us, it's a good way for him to go out at home," said Suns coach Rick Hall, who also coached deGrom in American Legion baseball. "We're hoping for the best for him next week (in the draft)."

Several scouts were in attendance, including representatives from the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants.

It feels like the Mets strategy was to draft college pitchers with have a live fastball, need work on their secondary pitches, and fairly easy signs.

Harvey, because of Boras, will be difficult to sign, but I imagine we should sign most or all of our top 10 picks.

Sounds like a converted SS with a good arm, a bit new to pitching, so raw.

DELAND -- Stetson's closer will have a shorter walk to the mound this year. He'll only be a few steps away, in fact.

That's because the Hatters' closer is also the team's shortstop -- Jacob deGrom.

Stetson coach Pete Dunn is thinking outside the box to fix one of his team's problems from last season.

"We just felt like we needed a closer," Dunn said. "We didn't have one last year. We kind of did it by committee."

So when the Hatters went through fall workouts, one of the priorities was to find a closer. And Dunn found one in a most unusual place.

"When we came into the fall, I said, 'Jacob, I'm not saying you can't make it professionally as a shortstop, but I know that you have a great arm and potentially you have a great pitcher's body. If I had to pick one over the other, I really think you have more professional potential on the mound,' " Dunn said. "Now we have no plans of taking him off shortstop. That's going to be for the scouts to figure out: Do they want to draft him as a shortstop or as a pitcher?"

DeGrom pitched one inning last year against UCF, but before that he hadn't been on the mound since the DeLeon Springs resident was on the DeLand Post 6 American Legion team. The 185-pound right-hander is looking forward to his first save opportunity, which could come as early as today, when the Hatters host Siena at Melching Field in the season opener for both teams.

"I'm excited about it," said deGrom, a Calvary Christian graduate. "My arm doesn't ever hurt and I'm only going to throw one inning or less at a time."

DeLand, Fla. - With three strike outs on 10 pitches, all fastballs in the top of the 9th inning junior Jacob deGrom (DeLeon Springs, Fla.) closed the door on the Hatters' first win of the season, 8-7 over Siena Sunday afternoon on Melching Field. Stetson improved to 1-1 on the season while Siena fell to 1-1.

It was the first career save for Hatters shortstop who finished with four strike outs in 1 2/3 innings of work.

"That is pretty much how we scripted it for this season, deGrom coming in and closing for us", said Stetson head coach Pete Dunn. "Jacob has a good slider, which he used in the 8th, but he stuck with the fastball in the 9th. When they are not catching up to it, stick with what is working."http://www.gohatters.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=14600&ATCLID=204892752

This is just over 3 months ago, the beginning of his pitching career.
