University of Memphis outfielder Drew Martinez was selected in the 23rd round of this month's major league baseball draft, but it's likely he'll put his pro career on hold.

The 21-year-old told Tiger baseball Daron Schoenrock that he ''has every intention of coming back'' for his junior year in 2011 after a stellar sophomore campaign that saw Martinez hit .377 with a Conference USA-leading 98 hits.

Martinez is spending his summer in the prestigious Cape Cod League, a premier wooden bat league for college players. His UofM teammate, infielder Adam McClain, also on a Cape Cod League roster.

''We are counting on Drew coming back,'' Schoenrock said. ''Normally, the big draft year for a player is after his third year. He can easily repeat and improve upon the year he had and propel his draft status next year.''

Quote:
Schoenrock said Martinez told coaches he turned down the Mets' original offer and Schoenrock also said Martinez's father, Chito, a former big league outfielder with the Baltimore Orioles, told him his son wants to come back for what dad termed ''(Drew's) real draft year.''

...so he will be a senior next year, therefore am sure the Mets will draft him in the 3rd round.

No, he'll be a junior. He was eligible for this year's draft because he turned 21 before the draft.

meh not upset about missing out on a singles hitter in the 23rd round. If he shows improvement this year and some pop then he cam move up to the 10-20 range and we can take him again.

Cape Cod update:

Quote:
On Memphis outfielder Drew Martinez (.344/.410/.355, 11 RBI, 17 SB in 93 AB): "He was drafted this year (in the 23rd round by the Mets), may return to memphis. Prototpyical leadoff hitter, can really run, aggressive on the basepaths. He's leading the league in hitting and stolen bases. He knows who he is—he hits the ball the other way, and he even takes pitches in BP, which not a lot of guys do. Very advanced approach to hitting."

Gotta love the .344 BA to go with the .355 slugging in 100 ABs.

No thanks.

The Mets love their bloodlines.
