Sabol Leaving Oregon

Posted Jul. 13, 2011 8:28 pm by Nathan Rode
Filed under: Around The Nation

Baseball America has learned that catcher/outfielder Stefan Sabol will not return to Oregon for his sophomore year. A Top 200 Draft Prospect in high school, Sabol was drafted in the 17th round of the 2010 draft by the Braves, but elected to go to school. He hit .254/.371/.349 in 39 games for the Ducks this spring. He saw limited action due to a broken bone in his left hand.

It is currently unknown where Sabol will land this fall, but it is likely he will wind up at a junior college, making him eligible for the 2012 draft. With the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League, he was hitting .300/.373/.383 in 60 at-bats.

20. Orange Coast CC SO C Stefan Sabol: premium athlete; plus arm strength, but sloppy throwing motion hinders utilization; plus raw power that hasn’t quite manifested yet in-game; potential above-average to plus hit tool, swing works with plenty of bat speed; transfer from Oregon; recovering from hamate injury; also has experience at 3B and in OF; 6-1, 200 pounds

2011 (at Oregon): .270/.388/.365 – 23 BB/28 K – 126 AB
2012: .250/.473/.359 – 26 BB/18 K – 64 AB

Really liking what we're doing at C this year, avoiding the Taylor Freemans and Tyler Howes of the world.

Also, do we think this is pronounced "Steph-an" or "Stef-ON", as in Urkel's alter-ego.

Cuz I hope its Stef-ON.

Another nice pick, and always love to hear about "raw power". A lot of hopeful future options at catcher coming out of this draft.

Yeah, PG USA ranked him 43rd nationally in 2010 and 2nd at his position.
