Metsblog claims he's close to signing, terms of the deal set.

Didn't expect that to be a long negotiation. Very cool to ensure he gets a full slate in 2013 though.

Piggybacking on the WSJ article above, I think I read Smith was the first HS 1B drafted in the first round in some time.

I've found myself shaking my head no at the 2 1st rounders that seem to be a consensus "yes" otherwise (Nimmo and Smith), yet completely understanding the 1st rounder that seemed to be a consensus "no" (Cecchini). We'll see how they end up.

I think this is the earliest a HS 1B has been drafted since Hosmer five years ago.

I'm hoping they got at least a small discount here from the allocation for this pick. If they got him for $2.5M for example, and have an extra $350k to spend on other tough to sign players, then the pick makes more sense to me. I don't dislike Smith, I just liked him a bit less than Peterson, Renfroe or McGuire, the guys who went right after him, and especially Braden Shipley, who seemed to be the consensus best talent on the board.

I honestly like him about the same as Cecchini. I don't think either was a bad pick, just not 100% convinced we got the best talent on the board. I was lukewarm on Nimmo at first as well, but his performance so far has me a lot more comfortable now.

I do think the WSJ article was a bit silly, as the only reason Smith isn't playing 3B is likely that he throws left handed. I don't see superstar upside there, but he's not *that* lacking in athleticism.

Not to mention that Joey Votto was a HS C/OF/1B who the Reds made a full time 1B early on because he didn't have good defensive ability anywhere but at 1B.

Smith having very good defensive ability at one position (1B) and a "chance" to play another position (LF/RF) should be considered a positive IMO.

Yeah, and if you're using the "He's 19" logic, then I guess the best report a scout could give us is:

"I have no idea. He's a teenager. He may go through 5 arm surgeries between now and his 30th birthday. He may add a pitch. He may lose a pitch. He may put on 30 lbs and add velocity. He may put on 50 lbs and eat his way out of the league. I literally have no idea what he is going to be."

But thats not what these guys are paid to do, nor what we are looking for them to do, right?

One of the scouting services (I forget which one) said Smith can make plays at 1b that other players can't make due to his athleticism. He doesn't have the foot speed to be a good OF but it's pretty clear he's an above average athlete for the position.

Pretty safe. I think this was probably a pre-negotiated pick...

I'd guess 2.65 - 2.68 range.

The longer I sit with it, the higher I go. I'm now thinking 2.75. I bet they try to save a bit of money on Church though.
