Church and Mazz have to be the targets to save money

One of the scouting services (I forget which one) said Smith can make plays at 1b that other players can't make due to his athleticism. He doesn't have the foot speed to be a good OF but it's pretty clear he's an above average athlete for the position.

Since the positional difference from RF to 1B is only worth about 5 runs, if you think he can be a +5 defender at 1B, then no reason to move him if he's not going to be at least an average corner OF. His foot speed isn't awful, it's just not enough to move him when he has good hands and reactions on the infield. If you had to play him in RF to get his bat in a lineup, you probably could.

I was expecting Smith to be around $2.6M, but after seeing what some of the others are getting, I'm thinking it might be a little higher. It will be interesting to see if Shipley gets over slot, since it seems most people had him a top 10 talent.

Has anyone listened to Matt Cerrone's interview with Wil Aaron, Dom Smith's high school coach? It is pretty funny - he is so psyched about Smith. He sounds kind of like Terry Collins on speed.

I guess the good news is Clint Frazier signed for 7.5% below slot, at $3.5M when slot was $3.787. A similar deal with Smith might have him signing for about $2.63M.

Watching the MLB.com video: I see a lot more Sean Casey than Ken Griffey or Robby Cano, as I've seen mentioned.

Yuck.

Certainly no scout, and the way he runs (read: lumbers) probably played into my comp as well, but thats was my first impression on stance, setup, load, swing, all that. Just a physical "look" comp, I have absolutely no idea on skills and most are very high on him obviously.

This is the video (only game, not BP, footage Ive found so far): http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?topic_id=4039 ... d=25489099

Also to my points from yesterday re: compensation (yes I know we were inside 15, but thats right aroun what smith was ranked): http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/to ... flashback/

You aren't looking awful on this one.

I'd look at Casey as a good comp also. And if DS gets fat, he won't have a long career either.
