I don't understand why there isn't more projectability with player's running and speed grades. I was slow as crap when I was 18 and by working with the right trainers I got extremely fast. Why can't Smith get with a world class speed coach and increase his 30 grade speed to 45? Not saying it's 100% or even likely but it's certainly possible to do.

Law grades with him current 45 speed, fwiw.

I honestly don't like the pick. I thought Renfroe and McGuire had higher upsides. Maybe JP Crawford as well.

Man I always look for the acer stamp of approval. This is kind of a downer. He seems a pretty athletic kid with a sweet swing and good makeup. Maybe his tools look quiet when compared with Renfroe or McGuire? Or do you think he lacks tools?

Well the tools are nice for 1B, but short for an OF corner. But it's so hard for me to look at a shortish HS 1B and say he's going to hit enough for the position. I can't look at this kid and tell you he's not going to top out at AA or AAA.

Part of it is I really haven't see good in game footage of him. Lots of guys can look good in BP, but what footage of him that I could find in game action, the bat didn't look special to me. Some of the scouting reports rave about his bat, his ability to square the ball, calling him the best pure hitter in the HS class. I just don't see video that shows that to me, but maybe these scouts know a lot more about him and have seen a lot more than I have. But there were also lots of favorable scouting reports on Cecchini last year, and I think some of these organizations like Baseball Factory exist in part to hype their own players.

So in a way this seems similar to the Cecchini pick to me, a kid who doesn't seem to have obvious superstar tools to me, but who supposedly has great makeup, and has had good training and is very polished for a HS kid.

BA on Smith (free info from their pick analysis):

Quote:
PICK ANALYSIS: One of the best pure hitters in the draft class, the Mets continue to go with high-upside players in the first round.

SCOUTING REPORT: Smith has been a big name in the Southern California prep ranks for years, and he has justified the hype by continuing to perform at a high level as a senior. He has an innate feel for his barrel, a relaxed approach and a pretty lefthanded stroke, causing most scouts to project him as a plus hitter in the big leagues. He still wastes at-bats and chases at times, and he can get caught on his front foot, but he has the bat speed and hand-eye coordination to get away with it at this level, and he has the aptitude to make adjustments. As he spends more time in the weight room and learns to stay back and use his lower half better, he figures to hit for plus power. Smith’s other plus tool is his defense at first base, where he has soft hands, quick feet and great instincts. He can touch 90 mph off the mound, and his arm plays well at first base. It doesn’t work as well in right field, where he is more of a fringy defender with below-average speed. But he can be a Gold Glove defender at first base with enough offensive potential to make him an all-star. The game comes easily to him, and he is so smooth sometimes that he can almost look nonchalant, but scouts rave about his makeup and work ethic.

WHERE HE FITS: Smith’s hitting potential may outweigh Gavin Cecchini’s overall upside, he’s that good of a hitter. Either way, Smith should rank in the top three in the Mets’ system when he signs.

Probably the worst place to do this but Gavin Cechinni is high upside?

I was commenting on that BA quote for more context.

Ahh. I skipped over that. It's an odd statement. A very odd statement

I should add, I know a lot of stuff, but know very little about scouting HS players. I've been following the Mets draft for a long time, but they've never been good at drafting HS guys in that time either, so I maybe haven't really seen it done right.

A kid like this though, the tools look good enough but not obviously great, so to go this high, they have to see a lot in the bat, they really think he's a hitter. So we should see him put up pretty good numbers early on if they are right.

Apparently BA still thinks so.
