All I can say is thank goodness they took Dom Smith or I'd be all over this one.

Austin Wison, Sandberg, Mason Smith, Boldt all available. We go for the reach with a guy who might have some coach ability issues.

At least he's high school so I can warm up to it.

Don't really know him, but it sounds like he has some nice raw stuff.

Project type pick, has solid arm strength and size. Was ranked much lower than this by BA and Law. I don't hate it, but I can't say I'm much of a fan of this pick. Meh.

Church's saga is an odd one; he's on his third high school in four years, is now living on his own in Henderson because he's already 18, and had to win a transfer fight to be eligible to pitch this year, finally taking the mound in late April. (Old enough to go to war, not old enough to choose his own high school.) He's more arm strength than polished product, sitting 90-94 with some late life up, but with below-average command and limited feel for his mid-70s curveball and 80-82 mph slider. His delivery is also unpolished, as he's off the rubber very quickly with a drop-and-drive delivery that drops more than it drives, although he turns his elbow over early and his arm is naturally very quick.

If he'd spent four years at a strong high school program in SoCal or Florida, he might be a late first-rounder, and I like his high-risk/high-reward profile if he gets to the late second or early third round.

Yeah, and if you're using the "He's 19" logic, then I guess the best report a scout could give us is:

"I have no idea. He's a teenager. He may go through 5 arm surgeries between now and his 30th birthday. He may add a pitch. He may lose a pitch. He may put on 30 lbs and add velocity. He may put on 50 lbs and eat his way out of the league. I literally have no idea what he is going to be."

But thats not what these guys are paid to do, nor what we are looking for them to do, right?

John Manuel at BA said this might be a pre-draft deal with this pick. He is a high risk high reward player. I like it, we are swinging for the fences with both picks. So far so good.

His delivery scared the crap out of me. I like anybody who throws 95 though.

Video of him pitching. Delivery looks much more smoother than the video on TV.

Perfect Game:

Ht/Wt 6-3, 199 lbs. Bats/Throws R/R HS Palo Verde | Graduates in 2013 Hometown Las Vegas, NV

Quote:
Andrew Church is a 2013 RHP/OF with a 6-3 199 lb. frame from Las Vegas, NV who attends Palo Verde HS. Nice squared shouldered athletic build, good present strength. Slow tempo leg raise delivery with some drift, arm works well, high 3/4's arm slot, some effort on release. Primary fastball pitcher, fastball topped out at 90 mph, mostly straight, throws a slurve type breaking ball with sweeping shape and some depth, good velocity on breaking ball, threw strikes with both pitches, didn't see change up. Development of off speed pitches will be key to future. Good student.

Andrew Church is a 2013 RHP/3B, SS with a 6-1 170 lb. frame from Las Vegas, NV who attends Palo Verde. With a tall athletic build, Church certainly looks the part of a prospect. When he takes the mound, he backs it up. With a fast arm and good athleticism he is able to maintain his body control well throughout his delivery and repeats well. Delivery is a bit violent but well controlled, creating some deception. He also hides the ball well throughout the delivery and gets good tailing action on his Fastball. His breaking ball can get a bit slurvy at times but flashed good 11-5 break when it comes out clean and projects to improve. Also flashed a developing Changeup and holds runners well. Still adding polish to his arsenal but has the talent to be a highly effective pitcher at the next level. Has very good potential with the bat, with good bat speed and strength in his swing, showed good swings in games and combined with his arm strength make him an interesting 3B prospect as well. Very interesting 2-way follow. Good student. Named to Top Prospect Team.
