Many of you keep referring to this pick as a major overdraft, and I don't understand why. Church was in both Klaw's (79) and BA's (89) top 100. Based on those rankings, Church is, at worst, a one round overdraft. Further, based on these rankings, there was a chance he would go before the Mets' pick in rd 3.

If they got a really good look, saw more than the general consensus, and liked the guy, you take him. With no guarantee he was going to be there in round 3, a one round overdraft from the general consensus isn't crazy. Was there someone else I wished they'd taken? Sure, but the thought that the pick is bad because Church was surely going to fall to the Mets in round 3 seems to be out of line with reality.

Question for those who know. It looks like he pulls his hand out of the glove an extra time before he pitches. Is that normal? I'm referring to the Youtube video posted.

I read he would go to school if he wasn't drafted in first 2 rounds

Since no one seems to have posted, Adam Rubin of ESPN found some more video:

Agree with all of this. And it is very likely the picks ranked ahead of him won't get taken until many rounds later because their signability has been known by other teams as a pipe dream. It moves him higher in the rankings if we must use that as our reasoning for not liking the pick. He may not be in 48 range even using that process by elimination but teams clearly know about certain players and their signability and where their drafted effects that more than we do at this juncture.

April 25th-

Wayne Newton (Las Vegas, NV)
Andrew Church from Las Vegas a potential top 3 round pick?

Klaw (2:01 PM)
Yes. Reportedly up to 96-97 in workouts. Starting tonight. Should be a ton of heat in there.

Yeah, and if you're using the "He's 19" logic, then I guess the best report a scout could give us is:

"I have no idea. He's a teenager. He may go through 5 arm surgeries between now and his 30th birthday. He may add a pitch. He may lose a pitch. He may put on 30 lbs and add velocity. He may put on 50 lbs and eat his way out of the league. I literally have no idea what he is going to be."

But thats not what these guys are paid to do, nor what we are looking for them to do, right?

I still think he may have been there in the 70s...where he would have been a nice little pick.

I think if he expects slot, there is going to be some gnashing of teeth on here...
