That's why we didn't draft him.

Why is it an overpay? lol Because we didn't take and sign him? People liked him at 11 for us. That's a nice pick and a nice move by Seattle. Didn't fit what we were trying to do budget wise and that's absolutely fine but in no way is that an "overpay".

It looks like the Mariners knew he would be expensive. Their #7, #9 and #10 each signed for $10,000 or $5,000. Their #8 has to be an underslot too or they are in the penalty and lose a 1st round pick. If they mets wanted him, obviously they lose Church, but also, no other overslots, no King, Oberste or Bashlor. 1 1st round talent and 3 cheap signings vs 4 players. Tough call I think.

LTKfRGM,
Again my statement isn't regarding should the Mets have done it (debatable). The question is was it an "overpay" at 1.7 million and I'd argue absolutely not.

I know. I was really just focusing on the dollar amount and the skill/ranking of the player. Others here said the mets should have taken him, but at that price, he actually would have cost 4, $500,000 or higher players. I don't have an opinion yea or nea, but in general, looking at the draft, I kind of like how the Cardinals approached it. They signed 3 1.5 million dollar, all top 40 ranked prospects. And a 4th for 500 K and the rest were mostly cheap. It's just interesting to me how teams try to maximize their money.

The Royals made an interesting play too, going under with their first and gambling that there would be a stud left when they picked #34. I just find the various strategies interesting and I think the Royals got what they wanted, even though people made fun of them on draft day.

The Yankees also drafted 3 top 40 (in fact 3 top 30) guys, though 1 remains unsigned. The mets only drafted 1 top 60 guy, but all of their first 10 picks were ranked 250 or lower. They may have been the only team that went for 10 quality guys in the first 10 picks. (edit, 11 quality guys).

and, I know, rankings mean little more than squat, but it's still kinda interesting.
